A new Transmissible Sub-acute Spongiform Encephalopathy (TSSE) appeared in 1986 in the bovine species, mainly concerning Great Britain where more than 100,000 cases have now been identified. This review describes the features of the disease that showed it belonged to this particular group of diseases. The currently available hypothesis about the origin of the disease, in Great Britain as well as in other countries where it has also been recognized, are presented. Lastly, the potential risks for the future, in the bovine species but also for other animal species or man, are discussed, in light of the known experimental data.

Protein supply to ruminants relies mainly on the flow of microbial crude protein (MCP) from the rumen, which is commonly assumed to primarily depend on energy supply. This study evaluated this assumption with recent data and tested if ruminally fermented organic matter (FOM) was a better predictor of MCP flow than total-tract digestible organic matter (DOM) and if more variables could improve the prediction of MCP flow. Introduction: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are chronic disorders of the gastrointestinal tract associated with gut microbiota dysbiosis and inflammation. Serum-derived bovine immunoglobulin (SBI) is used to manage IBS and IBD and has shown prebiotic-like effects in ex vivo models. Re-establishing a healthy gut microbiome with novel treatments like SBI could help treat the underlying causes of these diseases leading to higher and sustained patient response.
