The tripeptide Gly-SeMet-Gly has been synthesized by a combination of solution and solid-phase methods. Increase in weight of the resin was very nearly theoretical, and purification was straightforward. Its absorption was compared to that of the corresponding peptide, Gly-Met-Gly, in E. coli using HPLC ion-exchange separation and fluorometric determination of the disappearance of peptides in the culture medium and the appearance of methionine and selenomethionine in the same culture medium. As E. coli are not known to possess extracellular peptidases, and in fact have been shown to possess transport systems for peptides, this absorption is interpreted as transport of the peptide through the cell wall and membrane into the cytoplasm, endohydrolysis of the peptide, and efflux of the peptides' amino acids. Uptake of both peptides was approximately equal, but was slowed when both peptides were present simultaneously.

Due to its availability and biocompatibility, the human amniotic membrane (hAM) is being investigated by a large number of researchers with the goal of gaining a better understanding of the materials' mechanical behavior and structural integrity and optimizing them for various Tissue Engineering applications. In this research, biopolymers sodium alginate (SA) and silk fibroin (SF) were electrospun onto a decellularized hAM, resulting in two types of hybrid scaffolds: hAM/SF and hAM/SF/SA. The mechanical characteristics of these nanofibers were then analyzed to guide scaffold optimization for applications using these materials.

Protein kinase C (PKC) reportedly plays a role in the pathogenesis of many vascular dysfunction-related conditions. In this study, we investigated whether PKCβ is associated with vascular contractile changes induced by angiotensin II (Ang II) exposure. Long-term (24 h) treatment of rat aortae and mesenteric arteries in Ang II-containing culture medium enhanced 5-hydroxytrypatamine (5-HT)-induced vascular contraction in a dose-dependent manner, in association with enhanced phosphorylation of PKCβ S660.

Observation of plant root morphology in soil is of fundamental importance in plant research, but the lack of transparency of the soil hampers direct observation of roots.
