The clinical and pathological findings, including those of immunohistochemical and ultrastructural studies, of two cases of tumoral calcinosis-like lesion (TCL) are described. Both cases were associated with chronic renal failure and hyperparathyroidism. One case presented as a rapidly growing 20-cm multiloculated, cystic, calcific gluteal mass on the sacrum, which was not clinically suspected to be related to hyperparathyroidism. The other case presented as a 2.5-cm calcific mass on the right foot that recurred after surgical excision as a 7-cm mass, which was clinically presumed to be related to secondary hyperparathyroidism. Light microscopic and immunohistochemical studies on both cases and ultrastructural studies on one case indicated that the calcifying process involved histiocytes and osteoclast-like giant cells of histiocytic origin lining the cystic cavities. Hydroxyapatite crystal formation and calcification appeared to develop predominantly from intracytoplasmic membrane bound vesicles and also from mitochondria. These findings are similar to those recently reported for familial tumoral calcinosis, which support its having a mechanism of calcification comparable with that of a TCL.

Calcinosis cutis affects 20-40% of patients with systemic sclerosis. This study tests the hypothesis that calcium-chelating polycarboxylic acids can induce calcium dissolution without skin toxicity or irritancy. We compared citric acid (CA) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) to sodium thiosulfate (STS) for their ability to chelate calcium in vitro using a pharmaceutical dissolution model of calcinosis (hydroxyapatite (HAp) tablet), prior to evaluation of toxicity and irritancy in 2D in vitro skin models.

Objective: This study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS)-guided coronary intravascular lithotripsy and rotational atherectomy in treating severe coronary artery calcification.
Methods: A retrospective analysis of 60 patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention at the General Hospital of Ningxia Medical University from October 2022 to August 2023 was conducted. The patients were divided into two groups: 30 received IVUS-guided coronary intravascular lithotripsy and 30 underwent IVUS-guided rotational atherectomy.

Background: The relationship between radiographic disc calcification score and FGF4L2 genotype has been reported in only a small number of dachshunds.
Hypothesis: A genotype with either 0 or 1 FGF4L2 copy will be associated with a lower number of calcified discs (lower K-n) compared with a genotype with 2 FGF4L2 copies.
Animals: Dachshunds registered with the Norwegian or Finnish Kennel Clubs for which both K-n and FGF4L2 genotype are known (n = 407).
