Exploring the Ascorbate Requirement of the 2-Oxoglutarate-Dependent Dioxygenases.

J Med Chem

January 2025

Ma̅tai Ha̅ora - Centre for Redox Biology and Medicine, Department of Biomedical Science and Pathology, University of Otago, Christchurch, Christchurch 8140, New Zealand.

In humans, the 2-oxoglutarate-dependent dioxygenases (2-OGDDs) catalyze hydroxylation reactions involved in cell metabolism, the biosynthesis of small molecules, DNA and RNA demethylation, the hypoxic response and the formation of collagen. The reaction is catalyzed by a highly oxidizing ferryl-oxo species produced when the active site non-heme iron engages molecular oxygen. Enzyme activity is specifically stimulated by l-ascorbic acid (ascorbate, vitamin C), an effect not well mimicked by other reducing agents.

Fluorescent nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-GQDs) with long-wavelength emission properties are of increased interest for technological applications. They are widely synthesized through the solvothermal treatment of graphene oxide (GO) using ,-dimethylformamide (DMF) as a cleaving and doping agent. However, this process simultaneously generates undesired interfering blue-emissive by-products.

Chemoprevention Strategies for Precancerous Gastric Lesions Beyond Helicobacter pylori Eradication.

QJM

January 2025

Peking University Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinical Medical School (Xiyuan), Peking University Health Science Center, Beijing, 100091, People's Republic of China.

Gastric cancer (GC) is a significant global health challenge, particularly in high-incidence regions like East Asia. Despite improvements in screening and treatment, the progressive nature of precancerous lesions-such as atrophic gastritis, intestinal metaplasia, and dysplasia-necessitates effective prevention strategies. This review evaluates the role of chemoprevention in GC, focusing on agents designed to target these precancerous lesions.

Photocatalytic conversion of CO2 into value-added chemicals offers a propitious alternative to traditional thermal methods, contributing to environmental remediation and energy sustainability. In this respect, covalent organic frameworks (COFs), are crystalline porous materials showcasing remarkable efficacy in CO2 fixation facilitated by visible light owing to their excellent photochemical properties. Herein, we employed Lewis acidic Zn(II) anchored pyrene-based COF (Zn(II)@Pybp-COF) to facilitate the photocatalytic CO2 utilization and transformation to 2-oxazolidinones.

pH is an important physiological parameter within organisms, playing a crucial role in functional activities in cells and tissues. Among various pH sensing methods, optical fiber pH sensors have gained a wide attention due to their unique advantages. However, current silica optical fiber-based pH sensors face some challenges such as weak biocompatibility, low biological safety, complex or unstable surface modification.
