Acoustic noise levels generated during high field MR imaging.

Published: May 1995

Although much has been published highlighting the safety risks of magnetic resonance imaging, little mention has been made of acoustic noise levels. As the clinically available gradient strengths of MR systems increase, acoustic noise levels will become more important. Measurements were made of the acoustic noise levels generated by magnetic resonance imaging on two high field systems (1.0T and 1.5T). These data were compared with those in the literature. On the 1.0T magnetic resonance system, comparisons were also made between data acquired using the standard gradient system (maximum levels of 10m T/m) and a new upgraded gradient system (maximum levels of 15m T/m). The results show that many sequences produce noise levels above the safe levels defined by the Department of Health and the Health and Safety Executive. Providing routine ear protection for patients is, therefore, important. Noise levels for the upgraded gradient system on the 1.0T scanner are in the range of 2 dB greater. As expected, noise levels generated were greater for the 1.5T magnetic resonance imager than on the 1.0T system.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy and corticosteroids as combined treatment for acute acoustic trauma.

Eur Arch Otorhinolaryngol

Motion Sickness and Human Performance Laboratory, The Israel Naval Medical Institute, IDF Medical Corps, Haifa, Israel.

Purpose: Acute acoustic trauma (AAT) is a sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) due to exposure to high intensity impulse noise. There are no acceptable treatment guidelines, although several studies showed steroids could be effective in restoring hearing levels. A recent report suggested that steroids combined with hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) are a superior regiment for AAT.

Comparison of ZnS(Ag) Scintillator and Proportional Counter Tube for Alpha Detection in Thin-Layer Chromatography.

(1) : Targeted alpha therapy is an emerging field in nuclear medicine driven by two advantages: overcoming resistance in cancer-suffering patients to beta therapies and the practical application of lower activities of Pb- and Ac-labelled peptides to achieve the same doses compared to beta therapy due to the highly cytotoxic nature of alpha particles. However, quality control of the Pb/Ac-radiopharmaceuticals remains a challenge due to the low activity levels used for therapy (100 kBq/kg) and the formation of several free daughter nuclides immediately after the formulation of patient doses; (2) : The routine alpha detection on thin-layer chromatograms (TLC) of Pb- and Ac-labelled peptides using a MiniScanPRO+ scanner combined with an alpha detector head was compared with detection using an AR-2000 scanner equipped with an open proportional counter tube. Measurement time, resolution and validity were compared for both scanners; (3) : For Ac, the quality control values of the radiochemical purity (RCP) were within the acceptance criteria 2 h after TLC development, regardless of when the TLC probe was taken.

A solution to address the issues of environmental light interference in Remote Photoplethysmography (rPPG) methods is proposed in this paper. First, signals from the face's region of interest (ROI) and background noise signals are simultaneously collected, and the two signals are processed by a differential to obtain a more accurate rPPG signal. This method effectively suppresses background noise and enhances signal quality.

With the advent of the 5G era, high-precision localization based on mobile communication networks has become a research hotspot, playing an important role in indoor emergency rescue in shopping malls, smart factory management and tracking, as well as precision marketing. However, in complex environments, non-line-of-sight (NLOS) propagation reduces the measurement accuracy of 5G signals, causing large deviations in position solving. In order to obtain high-precision position information, it is necessary to recognize the propagation state of the signal before distance measurement or angle measurement.

: This study aimed to examine the prevalence of dental fear among schoolchildren in Bosnia and Herzegovina, analyze the distribution of dental anxiety by gender, age, and place of residence in relation to perceived sources of fear, and evaluate its association with oral health status. : The sample included 355 schoolchildren between the ages of 12 and 15. Data were gathered using a self-assessment questionnaire, a brief clinical oral examination, and the Children's Fear Survey Schedule-Dental Subscale (CFSS-DS).
