Esophageal peristalsis and sphincter function are controlled by the autonomic nervous system, with contributions from parasympathetic, sympathetic, and enteric divisions. Proximal regions, including the upper esophageal sphincter, are composed of striated muscle and are under direct (cholinergic) control of vagal motoneurons located in the nucleus ambiguus. Sequential peristaltic contraction is coordinated by a brainstem pattern generator circuit involving the nucleus of the solitary tract and modulated by vagal afferents. Distal esophageal regions including the lower sphincter are controlled by intramural enteric circuitry, with a poorly characterized contribution from vagal preganglionic fibers arising in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus. Peristaltic contraction depends on cholinergic (muscarinic) excitation and NO-mediated inhibition. Neurally-produced lower esophageal sphincter relaxation is mediated by NO, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, or both.

The regulation of gene expression relies on the coordinated action of transcription factors (TFs) at enhancers, including both activator and repressor TFs. We employed deep learning (DL) to dissect HepG2 enhancers into positive (PAR), negative (NAR), and neutral activity regions. Sharpr-MPRA and STARR-seq highlight the dichotomy impact of NARs and PARs on modulating and catalyzing the activity of enhancers, respectively.

Background: Despite extensive studies of the Mesozoic-Cenozoic magmatic history of Svalbard, little has been done on the Paleozoic magmatism due to fewer available outcrops.
Methods: 2D seismic reflection data were used to study magmatic intrusions in the subsurface of eastern Svalbard.
Results: This work presents seismic evidence for west-dipping, Middle Devonian-Mississippian sills in eastern Spitsbergen, Svalbard.

Background: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) with onset in youth may be more consequential for adverse outcomes than that detected later in adulthood. Transaminitis in the general population is a marker of the prevalence of MASLD. There are no previous community-based studies in Indian youth assessing the prevalence of transaminitis.

Background: In a recent randomized trial, six months of financial incentives contingent for recent alcohol abstinence led to lower levels of hazardous drinking, while incentives for recent isoniazid (INH) ingestion had no impact on INH adherence, during TB preventive therapy among persons with HIV (PWH). Whether the short-term incentives influence long-term alcohol use and HIV viral suppression post-intervention is unknown.
Methods: We analyzed twelve-month HIV viral suppression and alcohol use in the Drinkers' Intervention to Prevent Tuberculosis study, a randomized controlled trial among PWH with latent TB and unhealthy alcohol use in south-western Uganda.

Enzootic bovine leukosis (EBL) is a malignant lymphoma of cattle that is mainly caused by bovine leukemia virus (BLV) infection. In this study, PCR-RFLP was used to investigate the frequency of the DRB3*009:02 allele in several farms with different herd management practices in Japan. A total of 742 Holsteins (384) and Japanese Blacks (230) were used as the sample size for the study, which was larger than the number of cattle in the study area with a confidence level of 95 % and a margin of error of 8.
