The authors present materials indicating that examination of nonagglutinating vibrios in the agglutination reaction with cholera sera after boiling, according to Sakazaki recommendation (1971), did not provide recognition of mucoid forms of cholera vibrio and its differentiation from cholera-like vibrios of other serological groups. It is suggested that one should take into consideration morphological peculiarities of the culture, stability of agglutination with cholera O-serum and the results of reaction of antibody adsorption in identification of cholera vibrios in the mucoid form.

Introduction: Nitric and hydrofluoric acids are commonly used in the commercial cleaning industry. We are unaware of reports of nitric acid inhalation forming methaemoglobin. Additionally, methaemoglobinaemia and treatment with methylthioninium chloride (methylene blue) may precipitate clinical uncertainty due to similar wavelengths of absorbance in pulse oximetry.

First Report of Fire Blight Caused by on Pear in Saudi Arabia.

Plant Dis

October 2024

King Saud University, Plant Protection Departement, Saudi Arabia, Riyadh, 11451, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, 11451;

Article Synopsis
  • In the spring of 2020 and 2021, pear trees in three regions of Saudi Arabia showed symptoms of fire blight, including shoot blight and reddish cankers, with disease incidence ranging from 10% to 25%.
  • Researchers isolated bacteria from affected samples and identified them as Erwinia amylovora through morphological and biochemical tests, confirming their identity via PCR amplification.
  • The study involved a total of 21 symptomatic samples, with the isolates exhibiting specific characteristics such as Gram-negative properties and fermentation patterns consistent with E. amylovora, which is known to cause fire blight in pear trees.

Normalization of Muc5b ameliorates airway mucus plugging during persistent infection in the CFTR rat.

Am J Physiol Lung Cell Mol Physiol

November 2024

Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine, Department of Medicine, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, Alabama, United States.

In cystic fibrosis, the airway gel-forming mucin MUC5B accumulates in the airways, preventing clearance of pathogens like (PA). The cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) (KO) rat model exhibits a similar accumulation of Muc5b. Our lab has shown that increased Muc5b precipitates the development of chronic PA infection.

Clinical, phenotypic characterization and genomic analysis of the mucoid Acinetobacter baumannii from a teaching hospital.

Microb Pathog

November 2024

Department of Clinical Microbiology, The First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University, PR China; Clinical Laboratory, China-Japan Friendship JiangXi Hospital, PR China. Electronic address:

Background: Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) has become a significant nosocomial pathogen globally over the past decade due to the increasing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant isolates. The formation of the mucoid phenotype is a crucial adaptive defense response to external pressure, but the clinical, phenotypic and genotypic characteristics and their relationship with sequence types (ST) and K locus (KL) types remain unclear.

To document a case of `preliminary` identification of Alternaria sp (a phaeohyphomycotic agent) based on morphology in tissue section in a patient with allergic fungal rhinosinusitis. A 25-year-old male, a known asthmatic in a post Covid -19 state, presented with headache, facial swelling and nasal block with discharge of brownish mucoid material. Debrided material from the right maxillary antrum and middle turbinate showed brownish mucoid material admixed with firm to hard degenerated bony spicules sent in formalin and subjected for histopathological examination.
