Published: April 1995

Xylanase from Pectinex 3XL was purified 70-fold by precipitation with an enteric polymer, Eudragit S-100. The purified xylanase was immobilized on magnetic latex beads via carbodi-imide coupling. The immobilized preparation showed 80% of the total activity bound to the beads. The pH optimum remained unchanged at 6.0 and the Km increased from 0.25 g/100 ml (free enzyme) to 0.39 g/100 ml on immobilization. Immobilization resulted in significant thermal stability at 60 degrees C. The time course of hydrolysis of xylan at 60 degrees C by free enzyme as well as immobilized enzyme was also studied.

Background/objectives: Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have gained attention in theranostics for their ability to combine diagnostic imaging and therapeutic capabilities in a single platform, enhancing targeted treatment and monitoring. Surface coatings are essential for stabilizing MNPs, improving biocompatibility, and preventing oxidation that could compromise their functionality. Natural rubber latex (NRL) offers a promising coating alternative due to its biocompatibility and stability-enhancing properties.

Rome & Schult, entrenched in ethnomedicinal practices, is recognised for its efficacy in treating stomach disorders. Traditionally used in Dharmapuri, Tamil Nadu for stomach ulcers, its matured stem bark latex is therapeutically relevant, especially for infections. This prompts scientific exploration into its antibacterial properties.

The escalating global emphasis on sustainability, coupled with stringent regulatory frameworks, has spurred the quest for environmentally viable alternatives to petroleum-derived materials. Within this context, the adhesives industry has been actively seeking renewable options and eco-friendly synthesis pathways. This study introduces geraniol, a monoterpenoid alcohol, in its unmodified form, as a key component in the production of waterborne pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) based on acrylic latex through emulsion polymerization.

This work introduces a novel 1-pot, 0-waste, 0-VOC methodology for synthesizing polymeric surfactants using acrylated epoxidized soybean oil and acrylated glycerol as primary monomers. These macromolecular surfactants are synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, allowing for tunable hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) and ionic properties. We characterize the copolymers' chemical composition and surface-active properties, and evaluate their effectiveness in forming and stabilizing emulsions of semiepoxidized soybean oil and poly(acrylated epoxidized high oleic soybean oil).

Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition Disease, Department of Pediatrics, Medical School of Ege University, İzmir, Türkiye.

Background: Cryptococcus neoformans causes cryptococcosis, primarily affecting immunocompromised individuals, including solid-organ transplant recipients, and, less frequently, immunocompetent people.

Case: A 15-year-old male with congenital hepatic fibrosis, portal hypertension, and cirrhosis underwent orthotopic liver transplantation. He received perioperative antimicrobial and antifungal prophylaxis and continued immunosuppressive treatment.
