Dopaminergic function in the lateral hypothalamic area (LHA) is important for processing intrinsic and extrinsic feeding related information. Brain microdialysis was used to examine if dopamine release in the LHA correlates with meal size in normal and bulbectomized rats. Food-deprived bulbectomized rats ate significantly less food (1.7 +/- 0.1 g) than food-deprived sham operated rats (3.1 +/- 0.5 g, p < 0.05), accompanied by a lesser increase in LHA-dopamine release (150.6 +/- 4.9% vs. 195.1 +/- 13.9, p < 0.02). LHA-dopamine release was significantly higher in rats which ate a full meal (2.9 +/- 0.1 g) than in rats which ate half a meal (1.5 +/- 0.1 g, p < 0.05), being 155.9 +/- 7.8% vs. 131.0 +/- 4.9% (p < 0.05) in food-deprived normal rats. Data suggest that dopamine release in the LHA correlates to the quantity of food consumed during a meal.

Objectives: Pilot study validating the animal model of depression - the bilateral olfactory bulbectomy in rats - by two nuclear magnetic resonance methods, indirectly detecting the metabolic state of the brain. Furthermore, the study focussed on potential differences in brain laterality.
Methods: Arterial spin labelling assessed cerebral brain flow in prefrontal, sensorimotor, and piriform cortices, nucleus accumbens, hippocampus, thalamus, circle of Willis, and whole brain.

Objectives: According to previous studies, ultrasound exposure appears to be a noninvasive method for modulating brain activity related to cognition and consciousness; however, its effects on emotional states remain unclear. Therefore, an animal model is required in which the effects and effect mechanisms of ultrasound exposure can be investigated. The olfactory bulbectomized (OBX) rat model is a well-established model of depression in which antidepressant drugs reverse deficits in the passive avoidance test 14 days after administration. Recently, the olfactory bulbectomized rat model has been proposed to be a model of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and the available data indicate similarities between the changes that typically occur in AD and those observed in OBX animals. In the present study, the occurrence of neurochemical impairments related to AD were investigated 8 months after OB ablation.
