Management of the neurosurgical emergencies in pregnancy.

Rom J Neurol Psychiatry

Neurosurgical Clinic, G. Marinescu Hospital, Bucureşti.

Published: May 1995

This study presents the files of nine pregnant women with severe neurosurgical diseases (traumatic, vascular, and tumoral) who were treated in the Neurosurgical Clinic, from 1982 to 1988. Conclusions were drawn after a survey according to the optimal therapy applied, to the mother or fetus priority, to the age of patients and to the severity of the neurological impairment. The early intervention of a team including the neurosurgeon, obstetrician and the specialist in the intensive care unit saves one life or both. A delay condemns both.

Faculty of Health Sciences, Comparative Anatomy and Experimental Histopathology and Surgery, Université des Montagnes, Bangangté, West Cameroon, Cameroon.

Penetrating head trauma is the most fatal form of head injury. Although many cases of penetrating head trauma have been reported in the literature, its management remains complex, requiring a multidisciplinary team, which makes it a challenge in district hospitals where human resources and technical equipment are limited. We aim to present a successful initial management of a case of penetrating head trauma in a rural district hospital before a transfer to a first category hospital.

Introduction: Endolymphatic sac tumor (ELST) is a rare neoplasm that exhibits aggressive growth primarily in the endolymphatic capsule and can potentially affect nearby neurovascular structures. The diagnosis of ELST poses challenges due to its low prevalence, gradual progression, and nonspecific symptomatology. It is currently believed that prompt surgical intervention is recommended for endolymphatic sac tumors upon diagnosis.

Up to 40% of intracranial aneurysms arise from the anterior cerebral artery and anterior communicating artery (ACA-ACoA) complex. The vast variability of vessel anomalies and the surrounding critical structures correlate with severe morbidity and mortality rates in case of rupture. In the era of cutting-edge advantages of endovascular procedures, surgical expertise is reducing.

Spinal dysraphism is the incomplete fusion of the neural arch, which can be seen as an occult or open neural tube defect. Meningoceles are a form of open neural tube defect characterized by cystic dilatation of the meninges containing cerebrospinal fluid without the involvement of neural tissue. Neurosurgical intervention is necessary in the newborn period since survival in advancing ages is often impossible.
