Urodynamics is the term used for a set of diagnostic tests that measure lower urinary tract function. A variety of tests may be performed, either alone or in combination. Cystometry is the method by which the pressure-volume relationship of the bladder is measured. It is the principal test used to measure bladder filling and storage function. This article discusses the indications and contraindications for the urodynamic evaluation of bladder filling, normal and abnormal findings, and interpretation of findings. In addition, patient preparation, procedural techniques, electromyographic activity during bladder filling and storage, and physiologic events and artifacts are addressed.
