Antibiotic resistance is a rising problem and new and sustainable strategies to combat bacterial (intestinal) infections are therefore urgently needed. One promising strategy under intense investigation is the inhibition of quorum sensing, bacterial cell-to-cell communication with small molecules. A key question with respect to the application of quorum sensing inhibition is whether it will impose selective pressure for the spread of resistance.

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is an uncommon autosomal dominant disorder that manifests as mucocutaneous pigmentation and hamartomatous polyps in the gastrointestinal system. Pigmentation of the skin and mucous membranes may be present from birth, but it typically appears in early childhood and can sometimes develop later. In addition to an increased lifelong risk of cancers and problems, such as gastrointestinal bleeding from polyposis, hamartomatous polyps can develop in the stomach, small bowel, or colon.

Fecal calprotectin is an established biomarker for ulcerative colitis (UC), one of the main IBD diseases, which provides indications of the presence and severity of inflammation in the digestive tract. Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) as a gold standard approach for fecal calprotectin detection is time-consuming and impractical in point-of-care settings.

Background: Chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) remains a significant problem globally with increasing estimates for disease burden. In a Phase 3 placebo-controlled trial, a novel treatment using the Vibrating Capsule was recently shown to be effective in treating patients with CIC. However, its safety and tolerability has not been described in detail.
