An automated micromethod for assessment of the lysozyme activity in the blood serum and saliva using a special program is presented. The test is carried out in 96-well polystyrene plates, this helping to save the reagents and spare the test samples without making the assessment less sensitive. The method intensifies the process of measurement, which is particularly evident in prophylactic screening for the detection of groups at risk of body reactivity reduction, local immunity disorders in children and adults, this latter fact being especially valuable.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the rising aging population in France and Western Europe, specifically individuals aged 85 and older, and their mortality risk in trauma centers' ICUs.
  • Conducted from 2013 to 2022, the research analyzed 365 severely injured older patients in 14 ICU trauma centers, assessing their frailty and other clinical variables.
  • High mortality rates were found, with 43.5% in the ICU and 45.5% at 30 days, linked to factors like traumatic brain injury and severe hemorrhage, highlighting the need for early geriatric interventions to improve patient outcomes.

Polyphenol analysis in human milk by a rapid, cost-effective, and accurate micromethod: translational development.

Rev Paul Pediatr

March 2024

Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, Facultad de Ciencias Médicas, Cátedra de Biología Celular, Histología y Embriología, Instituto de Biología Celular, Ciudad de Córdoba, Córdoba, Argentina.

Objective: To develop a rapid method for analysing polyphenols, which are potentially active antioxidants against neonatal oxidative stress, from small human milk (HM) volumes.

Methods: Acid and alkaline extractions were compared using two dyes: Folin-Ciocalteu and Fast Blue BB. Linearity, sensitivity, recovery percentage, polyphenol content, precision, and stability were assessed in 14 HM samples and compared using the Kruskal-Wallis H test (p<0.

Staphylococcus lugdunensis produces lugdulysin, a metalloprotease that may contribute to its virulence. This study aimed to evaluate the biochemical aspects of lugdulysin and investigate its effect on Staphylococcus aureus biofilms. The protease was isolated and characterized for its optimal pH and temperature, hydrolysis kinetics, and influence of metal cofactor supplementation.
