Article Synopsis
  • Schistosomiasis is a significant public health issue in sub-Saharan Africa, with control programs depending on effective mapping and widespread drug distribution, while hybridization between certain schistosoma species complicates these efforts.
  • Research in Cameroon shows that urogenital schistosomiasis, mostly caused by Schistosoma haematobium and its hybrids, has become more common than intestinal schistosomiasis, which is linked to Schistosoma guineensis.
  • A genome-wide study using RADseq revealed hybrid populations of S. guineensis and S. haematobium in Cameroon but not on São Tomé, suggesting varying dynamics in hybridization across regions, while also indicating

Chlamydia muridarum actively grows in murine mucosae and is a representative model of human chlamydial genital tract disease. In contrast, C. trachomatis infections in mice are limited and rarely cause disease.

Inter-species Transplantation of Blastocysts between Medaka and Zebrafish.

Transplantation of blastocysts from a donor to a host blastula constitutes a powerful experimental tool to tackle major developmental biology questions. The technique is widely implemented in diverse biological models including teleost fish, where it is typically used for intra-species blastula transplantations - , labeled blastocysts into a non-labeled host to follow lineages, or mutant blastocysts into a wild-type host to address autonomous vs. non-autonomous roles of a gene of interest.

[Interspecies systemic chimeras].

Inter-species chimeras are both fantastic and monstrous creatures from Greek or Egyptian mythology, and a long-established research tool. Recent advances in the field of pluripotent stem cells have made it possible to extend the repertoire of inter-species chimeras to "systemic" chimeras, in which the mixing of cells from both species involves all organs including the germline. These chimeric embryos and fetuses open up new research avenues and potential medical applications.

Generation of Functional Organs Using a Cell-Competitive Niche in Intra- and Inter-species Rodent Chimeras.

Interspecies organ generation via blastocyst complementation has succeeded in rodents, but not yet in evolutionally more distant species. Early developmental arrest hinders the formation of highly chimeric fetuses. We demonstrate that the deletion of insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (Igf1r) in mouse embryos creates a permissive "cell-competitive niche" in several organs, significantly augmenting both mouse intraspecies and mouse/rat interspecies donor chimerism that continuously increases from embryonic day 11 onward, sometimes even taking over entire organs within intraspecies chimeras.
