To objective determine the area of corneal abrasion, a video camera was connected to a slit-lamp. The videosignal was digitized and analyzed by a computer program. The maximal horizontal and vertical diameters were measured as well as the total abraded area. The algorithms of calculating healing velocity of corneal epithelium are discussed, and this system was tested on patients treated for myopia with a 193 nm ArF excimer laser. It was shown that topical steroid application did not impair corneal epithelial healing velocity.

Electroactive membranes enhance in-situ alveolar ridge preservation via spatiotemporal electrical modulation of cell motility.

Biomaterials

December 2024

Hospital of Stomatology, Guanghua School of Stomatology, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Stomatology, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, 510055, China. Electronic address:

Post-extraction alveolar bone resorption invariably compromises implant placement and aesthetic restoration outcomes. Current non-resorbable membranes exhibit limited efficacy in alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) due to insufficient cell recruitment and osteoinductive capabilities. Herein, we introduce a multifunctional electroactive membrane (PPy-BTO/P(VDF-TrFE), PB/PT) designed to spatiotemporally regulate cell migration and osteogenesis, harmonizing with the socket healing process.

Case: A 35-year-old man with morbid obesity sustained an ultra-low velocity (ULV) rotational knee dislocation secondary to a fall from standing. The patient was successfully treated using a subcutaneous knee-spanning internal fixator, the "INFIX" technique, which has previously been described for pelvic ring injuries.

Conclusion: This novel technique maintained the stable reduction of an ULV knee dislocation in a patient with morbid obesity until adequate healing was achieved.

Proliferative potential and angiogenic characteristics of blood outgrowth endothelial cells derived from middle-aged and older adults.

J Geriatr Cardiol

November 2024

Department of Laboratory Medicine, Affiliated Sixth People's Hospital South Campus, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Shanghai, China.

Objectives: Autologous blood outgrowth endothelial cells (BOECs) have been proposed to induce therapeutic angiogenesis for treating cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). The aim of the present study was to investigate the proliferative potential and angiogenic characteristics of BOECs among middle-aged and older adults, the population particularly susceptible to CVDs.

Methods: BOECs were isolated from 48 peripheral blood samples of subjects aged 56 ± 4 years.

As the number of cerebral aneurysms treated with flow diverters continues to increase, it is important to understand what factors influence not only thrombus formation within the aneurysm cavity but also fibrin accumulation across the device and its associated disruption and blockage of the inflow stream. Both processes contribute to the eventual occlusion of the aneurysm or its continued patency and incomplete occlusion which may require future re-treatment. To investigate fibrin accumulation on flow diverters placed across the neck of cerebral aneurysms, a previously developed computational model that couples flow and fibrin dynamics is used in combination with experimental in vitro models of cerebral aneurysms treated with flow diverters.
