Unlabelled: Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a ubiquitous herpesvirus found in human breast milk that is frequently transmitted from HCMV-seropositive mothers to their infants during the postnatal period. Despite extensive research, the mechanisms underlying HCMV transmission from breast milk and the anatomical location at which virus transfer takes place remain unclear. Breast milk contains many uniquely differentiated macrophages that undergo specific morphological and functional modifications in the mammary gland during lactation.

The Role of Cow's Milk Consumption in Breast Cancer Initiation and Progression.

Curr Nutr Rep

March 2023

Institute for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, University Hospital of Regensburg, University of Regensburg, D-93053, Regensburg, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • This review examines how cow's milk consumption may contribute to the risk of estrogen receptor-α-positive breast cancer (BCa) by connecting recent studies and molecular insights.
  • Evidence from new cohort studies links milk intake to increased levels of IGF-1, insulin, and estrogen, which are all known factors in breast cancer development.
  • Potential harmful components in commercial milk, such as various microRNAs, chemicals, and pollutants, highlight the need for further research to understand how milk exposure during critical developmental periods may influence breast cancer risk.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) commonly leads to adverse pregnancy outcomes and long-term metabolic complications in offspring. Breastfeeding has been shown to rewrite the fetal "metabolic programming" resulting from maternal diabetes and finally lead to a lower risk of future metabolic disease. Lipids in breast milk act like hormones to promote infant growth and development, but there is minimal information invested thus far in constitution changes of lipids in breast milk, especially in the context of GDM.

Breastfeeding has been associated with long lasting health benefits. Nutrients and bioactive components of human breast milk promote cell growth, immune development, and shield the infant gut from insults and microbial threats. The molecular and cellular events involved in these processes are ill defined.
