Introduction: Asthma and allergies are chronic inflammatory disorders that are triggered owing to aberrant responses of the immune system against typically innocent environmental substances. Retinoic acid (RA) represents a biologically active metabolite of vitamin A (VA) and high-affinity ligand for RA receptor (RAR) that is implicated in a wide variety of biological processes, including cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, organogenesis, reproduction, and immune responses. In the immune system, RA contributes to the induction of regulatory T (Treg) cells, adhesion molecules required for homing of B and T cells in the gut, and tolerance.
