Open skull surgery of deeply located intracerebral lesions requires precise determination of the treatment area in 3-dimensional (3-D) space. 3-D MRI can give important additional information in presurgical determination of the surgical approach to the target, taking into account highly functional brain areas and important vascular structures. The day before surgery, a grid composed of 9 tubings intersecting at 90 degrees at 1 cm intervals and filled with a CuSO4 solution is firmly attached to the skin of the patient's head in the presumed region of the craniotomy. A 3-D turbo-FLASH sequence is then performed in the sagittal plane after intravenous Gd-DOTA injection on a 1T Magneton. 3-D surface reconstruction of the cortical gyri and sulci is performed. Once the gyri are identified, the 3-D program is then implemented in order to perform a color display of the cortical veins and of the tumor boundaries. The surgical access is then chosen by the surgeon, taking into account highly functional areas. Finally, the boundaries of the tumor are projected on the cortex reconstruction and on the external reference placed on the skin. The entry place for surgery as well as the size of craniotomy are drawn on the skin and the tubed grid is removed. The accuracy of this method tested in 9 patients with deeply located brain tumors or arteriovenous malformations was very satisfactory.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Efficient luminescent solar concentrators based on solvent polarity induced multiple-colored carbon dots.

J Colloid Interface Sci

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Bio-Fibers and Eco-Textiles, Qingdao University, No. 308 Ningxia Road, Qingdao 266071 PR China. Electronic address:

Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) are large scale sunlight collector and can be used for building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). Achieving high-performance LSCs requires fluorophores with broad absorption, high quantum yield and a large Stokes shift. Nevertheless, conventional high-efficiency LSCs typically rely on heavy metal-based quantum dots as fluorophores.

Topology Design of Soft Phononic Crystals for Tunable Band Gaps: A Deep Learning Approach.

Materials (Basel)

January 2025

School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Hainan University, Haikou 570228, China.

The phononic crystals composed of soft materials have received extensive attention owing to the extraordinary behavior when undergoing large deformations, making it possible to provide tunable band gaps actively. However, the inverse designs of them mainly rely on the gradient-driven or gradient-free optimization schemes, which require sensitivity analysis or cause time-consuming, lacking intelligence and flexibility. To this end, a deep learning-based framework composed of a conditional variational autoencoder and multilayer perceptron is proposed to discover the mapping relation from the band gaps to the topology layout applied with prestress.

Quantifying Pulmonary Microvascular Density in Mice Across Lobules.

J Vis Exp

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Drug-Targeting and Drug Delivery System of the Education Ministry and Sichuan Province, Sichuan Engineering Laboratory for Plant-Sourced Drug and Sichuan Research Center for Drug Precision Industrial Technology, West China School of Pharmacy, Sichuan University;

The abnormal alternation of pulmonary angiogenesis is related to lung microvascular dysfunction and is deeply linked to vascular wall integrity, blood flow regulation, and gas exchange. In murine models, lung lobes exhibit significant differences in size, shape, location, and vascularization, yet existing methods lack consideration for these variations when quantifying microvascular density. This limitation hinders the comprehensive study of lung microvascular dysfunction and the potential remodeling of microvasculature circulation across different lobules.

In recent years, the Telaaobao Mineral Area in the Northwestern Ordos Basin has been newly discovered as a uranium mineralization area with its ore-bearing target layer located within the Lower Cretaceous Huanhe Formation, belonging to a new area and a new layer, and has great uranium deposit formation potential. In order to deeply study the issues of the ore-bearing target in this area, such as the petrology, mineralogy, and uranium mineralization of the ore-bearing sandstone, based on the data from field geological investigation and drill core logging, the petrological characteristics of the ore-bearing sandstone of the target layer are preliminarily interpreted using a polarizing microscope and a scanning electron microscope, and the uranium mineral composition, uranium occurrence state, and uranium deposit mineralization are investigated through the electron probe microanalysis technique in this paper. The results show that the target layer sandstone in the study area has the characteristics of proximal deposit and has undergone significant epigenetic alteration and transformation, producing favorable conditions for uranium- and oxygen-containing water transportation and uranium mineralization.

The retromer is a highly conserved eukaryotic complex formed by the cargo selective complex (CSC) and the sorting nexin (SNX) dimer subcomplexes. Its function is protein recycling and recovery from the endosomes to conduct the target molecules to the trans-Golgi network or the plasma membrane. The protozoan responsible for human amoebiasis, , exhibits an active membrane movement and voracious phagocytosis, events in which the retromer may be fully involved.
