The indirect dopamine agonist, pemoline (120-300 mg/kg s.c.), can induce self-biting behavior in the rat. The present study demonstrates that the non-competitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist, dizocilpine (MK-801, 0.2 mg/kg s.c.), significantly attenuates pemoline-induced self-biting behavior, while simultaneously increasing locomotor activity. When animals received a fixed dose of MK-801 with increasing doses of pemoline, a competitive relationship emerged such that high-dose pemoline surmounted the antagonistic effect of MK-801. In contrast to spiperone, delayed administration of MK-801 was ineffective in blocking the subsequent expression of self-biting behavior, suggesting that dizocilpine exerts its protective effect early in the cascade of events which eventually leads to self-biting behavior in this paradigm.

Lesch-Nyhan syndrome (LNS) is a rare X-linked recessive disorder caused by a mutation in the (HPRT1) gene. This syndrome is characterized by excessive production of uric acid, mental retardation, self-mutilation, choreoathetosis, and spasticity. The most distinctive symptom is compulsive self-mutilation.

Orthotopic rat liver transplantation (OLT) is a complex microsurgical procedure extensively applied to basic science, myriad complications can occur, but incision-related self-biting has not been reported after OLT. For the project of tolerance induction through stem cells, we performed OLT from Lewis to Brown Norway (BN) rats as an acute rejection model and divided the study was into the transverse incision group (n = 15) and midline incision group (n = 22), while cyclosporine A was subcutaneously injected for 10-day immunosuppression use, lidocaine cream was used for pain-relieving. The recipient survival and wound status were the primary endpoint of this study.

The ventral pallidum (VP) is central in the limbic Basal Ganglia circuit, controlling both appetitive (approach) and aversive (avoidance) motivated behaviors. Nevertheless, VP involvement in pathological aspects remains unclear, especially in the behavioral expression of different motivational dysfunctions. This study aimed to investigate how the VP contributes to the expression of abnormal behaviors opposite GABAergic dysfunctions.

Lesch-Nyhan syndrome (LNS) is an inherited recessive X-related disorder caused by a deficiency of the purine salvage enzyme hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase. It is characterized by dystonia and compulsive self-mutilation, in particular, biting behavior on the oral mucosa, tongue, lips, fingers, and shoulders, typically before one year of age. The majority of these patients require several procedures, including dental extractions, to prevent significant secondary lesions.
