Oral administration of Styrax camporum Pohl and Caesalpinia ferrea Martius stem extracts, atropine, and cimetidine, during 15 days, decreased the ulceration size, gastric secretion volume, and increased collagen fibre number of chronic ulcer induced by acetic acid in rats. The pH increased and the concentration of hydrochloric acid decreased after administration of atropine and cimetidine. The ethyl acetate fraction, obtained by chromatography from Styrax camporum Pohl extracts, showed antiulcer activity. The subchronic toxicity was studied during 30 days, through weight variation, water and food consumption and spleen, lung, kidney and liver relative weights. No difference to the control-lot was observed.

Pohl, a typical species from the Brazilian cerrado, commonly known as "benjoeiro", is used to treat gastroduodenal diseases. In previous studies carried out by our research group, hydroalcoholic extract of stems (SCHE) exhibited antigenotoxic and antiproliferative effects. Styrax camporum Pohl. (Styracaceae) is a woody species that grows on acidic soils from the Brazilian savanna with high aluminum (Al) saturation (m% > 50%), where it accumulates ~ 1500 mg Al per kg dry leaves. Using nutrient solution, a previous study showed that 1480 μM Al causes toxicity symptoms, which raises the question whether less than 1480 μM Al could cause beneficial effects on this species.

This study evaluated the influence of Styrax camporum stems hydroalcoholic extract (SCHE) and of chemical markers of the genus, egonol (EG) and homoegonol (HE), on DNA damage induced in V79 cells by mutagens with different mechanisms of action. These natural products were combined with different mutagens [methyl methanesulfonate (MMS), hydrogen peroxide (HO), (S)-(+)-camptothecin (CPT), and etoposide (VP-16)] to evaluate the modulatory effect on DNA damage. The results showed that SCHE was genotoxic at the highest concentration tested (60 µg/mL).
