The number of new cases--or incidence--of tuberculosis is increasing in nearly every region of the world. A number of forces have resulted in the increased incidence of TB in developed countries, including the HIV epidemic, homelessness, and emigration from highly endemic regions. Although the number of new cases in Canada is relatively constant, the TB experience in the United States serves as a reminder that this situation could change rapidly. The appearance of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis has added to the urgency of situation. The basic methods of preventing TB transmission include preventing the release of the organism into the air, removing the organism from the air, and preventing the inhalation of the organism. Identifying and appropriately treating every person with active tuberculosis is an extremely important component of the control strategy; adequate ventilation, filtering air, and ultraviolet germicidal irradiation are methods used to remove the organism from the air; and masks and other personal protective devices, such as high-efficiency particulate air filters (HEPA), have been suggested as a means of preventing inhalation of the organism. In addition, identifying new TB infections and using chemoprophylaxis often prevents infection from progressing to active disease. Given the route by which tuberculosis is transmitted, it is necessary for both dentists and allied dental personnel to be aware of the risks they may face in day-to-day practice, and the means by which they can protect themselves and their patients.

Floating photovoltaics (FPVs), solar panels installed on floating structures in freshwater ecosystems such as lakes, represent a growing renewable technology aimed at decarbonizing the energy sector. However, robust empirical assessments of its environmental effects are still lacking. We used a Before-After-Control-Impact design replicated at the ecosystem level (n = 6 lakes: three lakes with FPV compared to three non-FPV lakes) to determine the global effects of FPV on water temperature over three years and allowing to isolate FPV effects from natural variability.

Background: Adding pembrolizumab, an anti-PD-1 antibody approved for treatment of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) to neoadjuvant (induction-) chemotherapy utilizing docetaxel and cisplatin (TP) followed by radiotherapy may improve outcome in larynx organ-preservation (LOP) that is investigated in the European Larynx-Organ preservation Study (ELOS). As biomarkers for response to TP and pembrolizumab +TP are missing but may include cytokines, this work aims on determining cytokines potentially linked to outcome as prognostic markers sufficient to predict and/or monitor response to successful LOP.
Methods: Collagenase IV digests were generated from 47 histopathological confirmed HNSCC tumor samples and seeded in 96-well plates containing pembrolizumab, docetaxel, cisplatin either solely or in binary or ternary combination.

Due to its anatomical and physiological similarities to the human eye, the porcine eye serves as a robust model for biomedical research and ocular toxicity assessment. An air/liquid corneal culture system using porcine eyes was developed, and ex vivo epithelial wound healing was utilized as a critical parameter for these studies. Fresh pig corneas were processed for organ culture, with or without epithelial wounding.
