Sites involved in antibody-mediated neutralization of feline immunodeficiency virus were mapped by reciprocal exchange of envelope fragments or amino acids between molecular clones of feline immunodeficiency virus with different susceptibilities to neutralization by a polyclonal cat serum. Combinations of mutations within HV-4 or within HV-4 and HV-5 changed the susceptibility of the viruses to neutralizing antibody.

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is the domestic cat analogue of HIV infection in humans. Both viruses induce oral disease in untreated individuals, with clinical signs that include gingivitis and periodontal lesions. Oral disease manifestations in HIV patients are abated by highly effective combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), though certain oral manifestations persist despite therapy.

The Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is a lentivirus belonging to Retroviridae family that affects feline immune cells, causing a progressive immunosuppression by depleting CD4+ T-lymphocytes, similarly to the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) in humans caused by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Diagnosis is usually performed by clinicians using rapid Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) or lateral flow tests that detect FIV antibodies. The aim of this work was the development of FIVCHECK Ab ELISA, a new rapid indirect assay for the detection of FIV antibodies in feline serum/plasma samples; FIVCHECK Ab ELISA was developed after a meticulous set-up and cut-off analysis through several methods, including the Youden's index and ROC curve, to achieve the best test performance.

Dirofilaria immitis and Dirofilaria repens, causing heartworm disease and subcutaneous dirofilariosis, respectively, are zoonotic mosquito-borne filarioids infecting a plethora of hosts including cats. Only fragmented data are available on the diagnosis and epidemiology of feline dirofilariosis. We assessed the occurrence of both nematode infections, their risk factors and clinicopathological abnormalities in cats, from six countries of the Mediterranean Basin.

With the increasingly close coexistence between pets and humans, coupled with reports of Cryptosporidium cross-infection between felines and their guardians, research aimed at understanding the epidemiology of these parasites in specific regions has become necessary. The principal objective of this study was to undertake a molecular characterization of Cryptosporidium in fecal samples from felines in the state of Goiás, Brazil (which is unprecedented for the region), and to assess the risk factors involved in the infection of these animals in the aforementioned locale. A total of 95 fecal samples were collected from domestic felines in the municipality of Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil.
