Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) are debilitating disorders characterized by the progressive and selective loss of function or structure in the brain and spinal cord. Both chronic and acute forms of these diseases are associated with significant morbidity and mortality, as they involve the degeneration of neurons in various brain regions. Misfolding and aggregation of amyloid proteins into oligomer and β-sheet rich fibrils share as common hallmark and lead to neurotoxicity.

The lightweight design of steel pistons for diesel engines based on thermo-mechanical characteristics.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Yunnan Key Laboratory of Plateau Emission of Internal Combustion Engines, Kunming Yunnei Power CO., LTD., Kunming City, 650200, People's Republic of China.

Traditional aluminum-silicon alloy pistons are gradually replaced by steel pistons, which has become the trend of future diesel engine development. However, the efficient design and broad application of steel pistons are limited by the higher density of steel. For this reason, a new lightweight design method for steel pistons in diesel engines was proposed in this paper.

Research progress in anti-renal fibrosis drugs.

Zhong Nan Da Xue Xue Bao Yi Xue Ban

August 2024

Department of Nephrology, Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, Changsha 410008.

Renal fibrosis is the common pathological basis for the progressive development of chronic kidney disease (CKD) caused by various etiologies. It is characterized by the persistent deposition of extracellular matrix, leading to renal tissue damage and impaired renal function, and ultimately progressing to kidney failure. Current clinical treatments for CKD mainly focus on managing the primary diseases, with no specific drugs targeting renal fibrosis.

Background And Aim: The progressive nature of type 2 diabetes often, in time, necessitates basal insulin therapy to achieve glycemic targets. However, despite standardized titration algorithms, many people remain poorly controlled after initiating insulin therapy, leading to suboptimal glycemic control and complications. Both healthcare professionals and people with type 2 diabetes have expressed the need for novel tools to aid in this process.

Biomarkers.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Stanford University, Stanford, CA, USA.

Background: Amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques and tau tangles represent pivotal hallmarks of preclinical Alzheimer's disease (AD). Accumulating studies highlight a potential association between Aβ and tau, suggesting that the progressive deposition of Aβ may significantly contribute to build up of tau in the entorhinal cortex which subsequently result in neurodegeneration and cognitive decline. However, pattern of Aβ depositions that would result in tau development or propagation remains elusive.
