A total number of two hundred eighty three long distance truck drivers and their assistants (loaders) who ferry goods between Kenya and Zaire were included in a cross-sectional study between September 1991 and April 1992. Twenty six percent of the study subjects were seropositive for HIV-1 and none were HIV-2 seropositive. Countries of birth and residence were significantly associated with HIV infection (X2 = 23.6, P = 0.0006). Significant associations were also found between HIV seropositivity and level of education from secondary school and above (OR = 3.4, 95% C.I. = 1.01-11.55); being circumcised was more protective, (OR = 0.38; 95% C.I. = 0.19-0.76), history of many years of driving (X2 = 9.3, p = 0.0254) and income (OR = 11.13, 95% C.I. = 1.35-91.95). When a stepwise multiple logistic regression model was fitted to all the variables observed to be significant in the univariate analysis, the following risk factors attained statistical significance: lack of circumcision (OR = 3.75); income greater than Ksh. 2000 (OR = 7.24); being employed in long distance driving more than 11 years (OR = 3.98); and secondary school education and above (OR = 4.06, 95% C.I. = 1.18-13.98). Reference for all the above Odds Ratios was 1.

Background: Sprouting blood vessels, reaching the aimed location, and establishing the proper connections are vital for building vascular networks. Such biological processes are subject to precise molecular regulation. So far, the mechanistic insights into understanding how blood vessels grow to the correct position are limited.

Objectives: Abdominoperineal resection (APR) is considered the gold standard surgical treatment for ultra-low rectal cancer. Anus-preserving alternative procedures have been tested to avoid the need for a permanent colostomy. The present study compares the functional and oncological outcomes of the traditional APR methods with inter-sphincteric resection (ISR).

Background: Patients admitted to tertiary centers are often transferred from long distances and thus follow-up care presents a significant challenge for these patients. The use of telehealth in outpatient visits has been shown to decrease travel costs and increase patient satisfaction, but many studies were performed in urban settings and did not address usability limitations for patients in rural settings. The purpose of the study was to understand the patient-perceived feasibility of utilizing telehealth in a large rural referral trauma center and assess patient's perceptions of telehealth.

Faculty of Physical Culture Sciences, Collegium Medicum im. dr. Władysława Biegańskiego, Jan Długosz University in Częstochowa, Częstochowa, Poland.

Introduction: This study aimed to assess the development of speed, endurance and power in young football players and to create percentile charts and tables for standardized assessment.

Methods: Cross-sectional data were collected from 495 male players aged 12-16 years at RKS Raków Częstochowa Academy in 2018-2022. Players participated in a systematic training in which running time 5 m, 10 m, 30 m, lower limb power (standing long jump), and Maximum Aerobic Speed (MAS) were measured using the 30-15 Intermittent Fitness Test.

Background: Surgery has been largely neglected within global public health despite growing evidence that the overall burden of disease requiring surgical intervention is rapidly growing and affordable access to surgical care can avert many deaths and disabilities.
