Who's Afraid of Murderous Rage? When Euthanasia Colludes with Self-Destructiveness.

Psychodyn Psychiatry

January 2025

Psychologist, Transparant Centrum GGZ, Leiden, The Netherlands.

The impact of intense countertransference affects in working with patients experiencing complex trauma can have a critical effect on decisions about euthanasia, especially when such decisions are made solely on the grounds of a psychiatric condition. These countertransference dynamics become particularly significant in the context of the rising number of euthanasia requests by psychiatric patients in the Netherlands. We contend that for a subgroup of patients with complex trauma, attachment trauma, and personality disorders, the label "treatment-resistant" may be applied prematurely and incorrectly.

Methods: In this review, we analyzed 92 experimental and quasi-experimental impact evaluations (IEs) from 11 LMICs that were published between 2010 and 2020.

Managing greenhouse gas emissions in the terminal year of life in an overwhelmed health system: a paradigm shift for people and our planet.

Lancet Planet Health

May 2024

Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact, Faculty of Health Sciences, McMaster University, Hamilton, ON, Canada; Population Health Research Institute, Hamilton Health Sciences, McMaster University, Hamilton, ON, Canada.

Article Synopsis
  • Health care is responsible for 4.4% of global carbon emissions, largely due to high resource use in hospitals, particularly during a patient's last year of life.
  • In this crucial period, health care demands rise sharply, leading to increased emissions that often conflict with patients' preferences for care.
  • Suggested solutions include improving advanced care planning, initiating palliative care sooner, reducing unnecessary medication prescriptions, and increasing access to community care options, with findings primarily based on Canadian data but relevant to other wealthy nations.
