: Antenatal diagnosis of cardiac abnormalities and counselling parents about postnatal care require a multidisciplinary team, which includes a paediatric cardiologist, a neonatologist, and a fetal medicine physician. Some of these kinds of expertise are not available in all centres with fetal medicine expertise. However, with modern technology, this could be provided remotely.

Haemodynamic monitoring after paediatric cardiac surgery using echocardiography and PiCCO.

Cardiol Young

October 2024

Department of Paediatric Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, University of Gothenburg, Institute of Clinical Sciences, Gothenburg, Sweden.

Background: Haemodynamic instability is common after surgical repair of CHDs in infants and children. Monitoring cardiac output in addition to traditional circulation parameters could improve the postoperative care of these patients. Echocardiography and transpulmonary thermodilution are the two most common methods for measuring cardiac output in infants.

Quadricuspid aortic valve in a 16-year-old Quarter horse.

J Equine Vet Sci

November 2024

Department of Veterinary Medicine, University of Perugia, Via San Costanzo 4, Perugia, 06126, Italy.

A 16-year-old horse, 400 kg, male, Quarter horse gelding was examined for a cardiac murmur that had not been previously heard. Physical examination revealed a regularly irregular pulse and a grade III/VI, decrescendo, diastolic murmur with a point of maximum intensity over the left heart base. Base-apex standard electrocardiographic examination at rest showed sinus rhythm with second-degree atrio-ventricular blocks.

Mitral regurgitation (MR) is associated with morphological and functional alterations of left atrium (LA) and ventricle (LV), possibly inducing LA-LV misalignment. We aimed to: (1) characterize angulation between LA and mitral annulus from conventional cine MRI data and feature-tracking (FT) contours, (2) assess their associations with functional capacity in MR patients, as assessed by oxygen consumption (peak-VO) and minute ventilation to carbon dioxide production (VE/VCO) slope, in comparison with MRI LA/LV strain indices. Thirty-two asymptomatic primary MR patients (56 [40; 66] years, 12 women) underwent cardiac MRI resulting in LA/LV conventional FT-derived strain indices.

BACKGROUND Lyme carditis typically presents with atrio-ventricular block; however, other cardiac manifestations, including varying EKG changes, myopericarditis and new-onset heart failure, can occur. CASE REPORT We report a case of a 52-year-old woman with past medical history significant for hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and chronic back pain who presented with new-onset heart failure in the setting of Lyme carditis. She presented with exertional dyspnea requiring supplemental oxygen, subjective fever, chills, fatigue, and arthralgia of 2-week duration.
