AI Article Synopsis

  • A male infant was born with severe anemia due to foeto-maternal hemorrhage and was later diagnosed with a liver tumor that had spread to his lungs.
  • The infant passed away before any treatment could be initiated, and a postmortem examination confirmed the presence of choriocarcinoma.
  • The mother was subsequently diagnosed with the same cancer, which had also metastasized to her lungs, but she has since been successfully treated.

Article Abstract

A male infant, born following an uncomplicated pregnancy, was severely anaemic at birth following significant foeto-maternal haemorrhage. At three weeks of age a tumour was found in the liver with evidence of metastatic disease in the lungs. The infant died before treatment could be started. Postmortem revealed choriocarcinoma which led to subsequent diagnosis in the mother who also had pulmonary metastases. The mother has been successfully treated. The case is described in detail and followed by a discussion and a literature review of reported cases of simultaneous choriocarcinoma in infant and mother.

Article Synopsis
  • Choriocarcinoma in neonates and infants (N-CC) is a rare but aggressive cancer often linked with maternal disease, with a median patient age of 6 weeks.
  • A study analyzing eight cases revealed that all tumors were diffuse, and most patients underwent a platinum-based treatment regimen, with some requiring surgery for residual tumors.
  • Despite a poor overall outcome, including half of the patients dying from the disease, four patients achieved complete remission, highlighting the potential for successful treatment through multimodal therapy.

Placenta accreta is a high-risk condition causing obstetric crisis and hemorrhage; however, its pathogenesis remains unknown. We aimed to identify the factors contributing to trophoblast invasiveness and angiogenic potential, which in turn drive the pathogenesis of placenta accreta. We focused on the transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1-Smad pathway and investigated the intrinsic relationship between the time- and dose-dependent inhibition of the ubiquitinating enzyme UCHL5 using bAP15, a deubiquitinase inhibitor, after TGF-β1 stimulation and the invasive and angiogenic potential of two cell lines, gestational choriocarcinoma cell line JEG-3 and trophoblast cell line HTR-8/SVneo.

The aim was to develop and update a guideline which would improve the quality of care offered to women with gestational and non-gestational trophoblastic disease, a group of diseases characterized by their rarity and biological heterogeneity. In accordance with the method used to compile S2k-guidelines, the guideline authors carried out a search of the literature (MEDLINE) for the period 1/2020 to 12/2021 and evaluated the recent literature. No key questions were formulated.

Royal jelly (RJ) has beneficial effects on human health, and some of these effects are reported to be the result of its estrogenic activity; however, chemicals with estrogenic activities may disrupt physiological estrogen signaling leading to adverse effects on human health. Thus, clarification of the mode of action of RJ is needed. Here, we investigated whether the estrogen-like actions of RJ are induced via estrogen receptors (ERs)-mediated genomic actions by using an in vitro reporter assay in human choriocarcinoma JEG3 cells and an estrogen-responsive reporter (E-Rep) mouse line that can be used to sensitively detect transactivation of ERs in multiple organs simultaneously.

Infantile choriocarcinoma is an extremely rare disease. We present a case study of a 1-month-old male with choriocarcinoma diagnosed simultaneously with his mother. On admission to hospital, the disease was very advanced and massive progression and multi-organ failure caused the death of the patient despite the implemented treatment.
