This article presents further results in the treatment of tibial shaft fractures using a Polfix fixator with screws covered with a layer of nanocrystaline diamond. The advantages of this new protective layer are presented in 16 additional patients. Research to date indicates that nanocrystaline diamond can be used successfully to cover the surface of surgical screws and plates.

Osteosynthesis - the history and the present day.

Ortop Traumatol Rehabil

October 2003

Katedra i Klinika Ortopedii i Traumatologii, Pomorska Akademia Medyczna, Szczecin.

The paper presents how mankind gradually learned to treat fractured bones and how the most effective methods of bone fixation were developed through a better understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the locomotor system. The history of osteosynthesis practically developed under our eyes, in the second part of the 20th century. The contribution of Polish specialists to the development of modern techniques of bone connection is also presented, including the design of bone-adjoining connection systems of the Zespol and Polfix type.

Katedra i Oddział Kliniczny Ortopedii, Slaska Akademia Medyczna w Sosnowcu.

Five patients treated operatively on account of tibia and femur shaft delayed union and pseudoarthrosis were re-operated by locked intramedullary nailing. The method permits stable bone fixation. Intramedullary canal reaming stimulates bone union, as it refreshes fracture site and is a source of bone graft.

September 1998

Oddziału Urazowo-Ortopedycznego Szpitala Miejskiego nr 2 w Siemianowicach Slaskich.

The paper deals with mechanical properties and structural changes within POLFIX external fixator plates used for tibial fracture treatment. The results indicate strengthening of the ALSI 316 L steel in the course of using of the plate. Structural comparison between the new and used implant showed insignificant increase of fatigue features within the plate.
