Employment supports for people with mental illness.

Institute for Community Inclusion, University of Massachusetts, Boston, USA.

Published: July 1995

People with psychiatric disabilities often require extensive support to maintain employment. The authors describe five areas that supported employment programs should carefully examine when creating a supportive workplace environment: "natural" co-worker supports, personal network supports, training supports, self-management supports, and organizational supports. The different support needs of persons with developmental disabilities and those with psychiatric disabilities are highlighted, particularly in regard to how social stereotypes of these two groups influence decisions about how to provide support. The authors also discuss strategies that can be used by transitional employment programs for creating more effective supports within the limitations of the transitional setting.

The negative symptoms of schizophrenia include diminished emotional expression, avolition, alogia, anhedonia, and asociality, and due to their low responsiveness to available treatments, are a primary driver of functional disability in schizophrenia. This narrative review has the aim of providing a comprehensive overview of the current research developments in the treatment of negative symptoms in schizophrenia, and begins by introducing the concepts of primary, secondary, prominent, predominant, and broadly defined negative symptoms. We then compare and contrast commonly used research assessment scales for negative symptoms and review the evidence for the specific utility of widely available off-label and investigational treatments that have been studied for negative symptoms.

Neurofilament Light Protein as a Biomarker in Severe Mental Disorders: A Systematic Review.

Molecular Markers Laboratory, IRCCS Istituto Centro San Giovanni di Dio Fatebenefratelli, 25125 Brescia, Italy.

Severe mental disorders (SMDs), such as schizophrenia (SZ), bipolar disorder (BD), and major depressive disorder (MDD), are heterogeneous psychiatric diseases that impose a significant societal burden due to their chronic disabling nature. There are no objective and reliable diagnostic tests for SMDs; thus, there is an urgent need for specific biomarkers to improve diagnosis, treatment, and resource allocation. Neurofilaments, found in cerebrospinal fluid and blood, offer reliable diagnostic and prognostic potential.
