The microsurgical extirpation of the mesocerebrum from the brain of fast-growing juvenile snails (Helix aspersa aspersa: H.a.a.) stops their growth. This suggests that neurosecretory cells of the mesocerebrum secrete a growth hormone. Neural grafting has been used as a tool to restore the impaired growth function after mesocerebrum removal in juvenile H.a.a snails. The transplantation of desheathed cerebral ganglia (CG) (i.e. CG with their glioconjunctive outer covering removed), into the place where the mesocerebrum had been re-established growth which depended on the age of the donors. For the grafts of H.a.a CG into H.a.a, it was CG from the youngest donors that restored growth best. However, the CG of adult snails still conserved a slight growth-stimulating activity. Transplantation of the CG from the large, fast-growing sub-species H. aspersa maxima (H.a.m), into the brain of H.a.a with mesocerebrum removed induced faster growth than the H.a.a CG probably because of a more abundant secretion of growth hormone. Our results show that intracerebral CG grafts are well tolerated in snails and that labeling of the neurones of the transplanted CG with a vital fluorescent stain (Fast blue), allowed the observation, over several months, of their integration into the lesion zone of the host brain.

The twenty-first century has brought forth a deluge of theories and data shedding light on the neural mechanisms of motivated behavior. Much of this progress has focused on dopaminergic dynamics, including their signaling properties (how do they vary with expectations and outcomes?) and their downstream impacts in target regions (how do they affect learning and behavior?). In parallel, the basal ganglia have been elevated from their original implication in motoric function to a canonical circuit facilitating the initiation, invigoration, and selection of actions across levels of abstraction, from motor to cognitive operations.

The role of striatal pathways in cognitive processing is unclear. We studied dorsomedial striatal cognitive processing during interval timing, an elementary cognitive task that requires mice to estimate intervals of several seconds and involves working memory for temporal rules as well as attention to the passage of time. While autonomic dysregulation and repolarization abnormalities are observed in subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), their relationship remains unclear. We aimed to measure skin sympathetic nerve activity (SKNA), a novel method to estimate stellate ganglion nerve activity, and investigate its association with electrocardiogram (ECG) alterations after SAH. Limb disorders and slurred speech are common clinical symptoms associated with acute ischemic stroke. Although urinary incontinence is a known symptom in many cases of acute ischemic stroke, the simultaneous impairment of both bowel and bladder function is relatively rare. The occurrence of fecal and urinary incontinence as the primary clinical manifestation in minor acute ischemic stroke is especially uncommon.
