Published: March 1995

A case of lung fibrosis is presented in a 44 year old male in whom interstitial pulmonary changes were observed in the course of bleomycin therapy of malignant granulomatosis. Following introduction of corticosteroids a radiological, clinical and functional improvement was observed. The functional changes were analyzed during the 7 month period of treatment. This case suggests that post bleomycin induced injury can be reversed with appropriate high doses of corticosteroids.

Cells are subjected to dynamic mechanical environments which impart forces and induce cellular responses. In age-related conditions like pulmonary fibrosis, there is both an increase in tissue stiffness and an accumulation of senescent cells. While senescent cells produce a senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP), the impact of physical stimuli on both cellular senescence and the SASP is not well understood.

The abnormally viscous and thick mucus is a hallmark of cystic fibrosis (CF). How the mutated CF gene causes abnormal mucus remains an unanswered question of paramount interest. Mucus is produced by the hydration of gel-forming mucin macromolecules that are stored in intracellular granules prior to release.

Despite advances in healthcare, bacterial pathogens remain a severe global health threat, exacerbated by rising antibiotic resistance. Lower respiratory tract infections, with their high death toll, are of particular concern. Accurately replicating host-pathogen interactions in laboratory models is crucial for understanding these diseases and evaluating new therapies.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram-negative bacterium that is notorious for airway infections in cystic fibrosis (CF) subjects. Bacterial quorum sensing (QS) coordinates virulence factor expression and biofilm formation at population level. Better understanding of QS in the bacterium-host interaction is required.

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) has shown limited treatment advancements, with minimal exploration of circulating protein biomarkers causally linked to ILD and its subtypes beyond idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). In this study, we aimed to identify potential drug targets and circulating protein biomarkers for ILD and its subtypes. We utilized the most recent large-scale plasma protein quantitative trait loci (pQTL) data detected from the antibody-based method and ILD and its subtypes' GWAS data from the updated FinnGen database for Mendelian randomization analysis.
