After the onset of the AIDS pandemic, HIV-1 (genus ) became the predominant model for studying retrovirus Env glycoproteins and their role in entry. However, HIV Env is an inadequate model for understanding entry of viruses in the , and genera. For example, oncogenic model system viruses such as Rous sarcoma virus (RSV, ), murine leukemia virus (MLV, ) and human T-cell leukemia viruses (HTLV-I and HTLV-II, ) encode Envs that are structurally and functionally distinct from HIV Env.

New arrangements of chicken major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I BF and class IV BG genes are created through recombination. Characterizing the immune responses of such recombinants reveals genes or gene regions that contribute to immunity. Inbred Line UCD 003 (B17B17) served as the genetic background for congenic lines, each containing a unique MHC recombinant.

Inositol hexakisphosphate (IP6) is an assembly cofactor for HIV-1. We report here that IP6 is also used for assembly of Rous sarcoma virus (RSV), a retrovirus from a different genus. IP6 is ~100-fold more potent at promoting RSV mature capsid protein (CA) assembly than observed for HIV-1 and removal of IP6 in cells reduces infectivity by 100-fold.

Silkworms have been used as a host for the production of recombinant proteins in a baculovirus expression system using Bombyx mori nucleopolyhedrovirus (BmNPV). To coexpress several recombinant proteins, a silkworm must be coinfected with several recombinant BmNPVs, which requires a difficult DNA manipulation procedure. In this study, we constructed recombinant BmNPVs containing three expression cassettes, Rous sarcoma virus (RSV) Gag protein, surface antigen 1 of Neospora caninum (NcSAG1) and SAG1-related sequence 2 of N.

The prototype fowl glioma-inducing virus (FGVp) causes fowl glioma and cerebellar hypoplasia in chickens. In this study, we investigated whether a strain of avian leukosis virus (ALV), associated with avian osteopetrosis and mesenchymal neoplasms, is able to induce fowl glioma. We encountered avian osteopetrosis and mesenchymal neoplasms, including myxosarcoma and rhabdomyosarcoma, in Japanese native chickens used for both egg-laying and meat production.
