The efficacy of extracorporeal cryohemosorption was estimated in the treatment of atherosclerotic patients in terms of the autoimmune theory of the pathogenesis of this disease. There was a slight decrease in the plasma levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides, there was over 2-fold reduction in the plasma levels of fibrinogen and fibronectin. All major components of apo B-containing lipoproteins and immunoglobulin G were found as part of the cryoprecipitate. An extremely high concentration of lipid hydroperoxides in the precipitate suggest that cryoprecipitation removes not only autoimmune complexes, but highly-atherogenic peroxide-modified lipoproteins. The three-fold decrease in the levels of lipoprotein-antibody complexes resulted in lower atherogenicity of apo B-containing lipoproteins. It is suggested that the mechanism responsible for beneficial clinical action of cryohemosorption sessions is largely associated with the removal of autoimmune lipoprotein-antibody complexes and peroxide-modified apo B-containing lipoproteins than correction of lipid metabolism.

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is less rare than one might think and, despite highly effective lipid-lowering therapies (LLT), more than half of the patients treated do not reach the lipid target indicated by the guidelines. In these patients, lipoprotein apheresis (LA) is the most effective tool to lowering apo-B containing atherogenic lipoproteins. In own center, since 1994, thanks to routinely cascade testing performed in patients who start LA, we have identified a pediatric population (30 subjects) that we analyzed retrospectively.

Background: Case-control, intervention and laboratory studies have demonstrated a link between apolipoprotein B-containing lipoproteins and clot structure and thrombosis. There is, however, limited evidence on population level.
Objectives: We determined the cross-sectional relationship between lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and apolipoprotein B (ApoB) with fibrinogen and plasma clot properties in 1 462 Black South Africans, a population with higher fibrinogen and Lp(a) levels compared with individuals of European descent.

Metabolic health is highly dependent on intestinal and hepatic handling of dietary and endogenous lipids and lipoproteins. Disorders of lipid and lipoprotein metabolism are commonly observed in patients with insulin resistant states such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes. Evidence from both animal models and human studies indicates that a major underlying factor in metabolic or diabetic dyslipidemia is the overproduction of hepatic and intestinal apolipoprotein (apo)B-containing lipoprotein particles.

Background: The substitution of monounsaturated acids (MUFAs) for saturated fatty acids (SFAs) is recommended for cardiovascular disease prevention but its impact on lipoprotein metabolism in subjects with dyslipidemia associated with insulin resistance (IR) remains largely unknown.
Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of substituting MUFAs for SFAs on the in vivo kinetics of apolipoprotein (apo)B-containing lipoproteins and on the plasma lipidomic profile in adults with IR-induced dyslipidemia.
Methods: Males and females with dyslipidemia associated with IR (n = 18) were recruited for this crossover double-blind randomized controlled trial.

Background: Low density lipoprotein (LDL) and Lipoprotein (Lp)(a) are proatherogenic apolipoprotein (apo) B-containing members of the non-high-density lipoprotein (non-HDL) family of particles. Elevated plasma levels of LDL cholesterol (C), non-HDL-C, and apo B are defining features of heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH), but reports of elevated plasma Lp(a) concentration are inconsistent.
Methods: We performed retrospective chart reviews of 256 genetically characterized patients with hypercholesterolemia and 272 control subjects from the Lipid Genetics Clinic at University Hospital in London, Ontario.
