A 32-year-old-woman with a history of endometriosis and chronic pelvic pain had left-sided pain and ultrasonographic documentation of a left pelvic complex cyst approximately 5 cm in diameter. Laparotomy revealed a left retroperitoneal cystic mass adjacent to the iliopsoas muscle and overlying the major pelvic vessels. The mass was dissected and excised. Histopathologic study revealed endometrioma and osseous metaplasia in a supernumerary ovary.

The advanced model of floral morphogenesis is based largely on data from Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) and rice (Oryza sativa), but this process is less well understood in the Triticeae. Here, we investigated a sterile barley (Hordeum vulgare) mutant with malformed floral organs (designated mfo1), of which the paleae, lodicules, and stamens in each floret were all converted into lemma-like organs, and the ovary was abnormally shaped. Combining bulked-segregant analysis, whole-genome resequencing, and TILLING approaches, the mfo1 mutant was attributed to loss-of-function mutations in the MADS-box transcription factor gene HvAGL6, a key regulator in the ABCDE floral morphogenesis model.

Research Question: Can a strategy for scoring oocyte quality, based on cumulus cell (CC) gene expression, prioritize oocytes with the highest implantation potential, while limiting the number of embryos to be processed in culture and the number of supernumerary embryos to be vitrified?

Design: An interventional, blinded, prospective cohort study was retrospectively analyzed. In the original study, patients underwent a fresh Day3 single embryo transfer with embryos ranked based on morphology and CC gene expression (Aurora Test). The additional ranking of the embryos with the Aurora Test resulted in significant higher clinical pregnancy and live birth rates.

BACKGROUND Important legal and ethical issues must be addressed in the practice of uterus transplantation, because it is a non-life-saving intervention. In all cases reported in the literature so far, uterus transplantation is preceded by oocyte retrieval, fertilization of the collected oocytes, and subsequent freezing of the embryos produced. This element should be considered because of the potential ethical, legal, and moral implications related to the existence and fate of supernumerary embryos in the event of transplantation failure.

Correct floral development is the result of a sophisticated balance of molecular cues. Floral mutants provide insight into the main genetic determinants that integrate these cues, as well as providing opportunities to assess functional variation across species. In this study, we characterize the barley (Hordeum vulgare) multiovary mutants mov2.
