The incidence of pica during pregnancy has been reported to range from 0% to 68% depending on the patient population. This study was designed to define characteristics and factors influencing the practice of pica in a rural obstetric population. Our study group was 125 consecutive pregnant women who were interviewed at their initial antenatal visit about attitudes and behavior regarding pica practices. The prevalence of anemia was determined. Chi-square and t tests were used when appropriate. A pica was found in 18 (14.4%) patients. There were no significant differences between patients with a pica and those with none with respect to age, race, weight, or anemia. Substances ingested included white and red dirt, ice, cornstarch, laundry starch, soap, ashes, chalk, paint, and burnt-matches. Characteristics of patients with pica included cravings (6 of 18 or 33.3%), pica before pregnancy (10 of 18 or 56.6%), childhood pica (6 of 18 or 33.3%), and the presence of other household members with pica (56.6%). Our study data suggest that pica is frequently associated with similar practices during childhood and nonpregnant states. These patients also may be at risk for lead toxicity or other environmental toxin exposures.

Native animals worldwide are experiencing long-term coexistence with invasive plants, leading to diverse behavioral changes. Invasive plants may create new habitat structures that affect the distribution or behavior of prey, which in turn might attract predators to these novel habitats, thereby altering predator-prey dynamics within the ecosystem. However, this phenomenon is rarely reported.

Objective: Reference intervals for hematologic and clinical chemistry values are useful when diagnosing a pathologic condition in animals. This study establishes relevant reference intervals for six species of wild birds that are frequently rescued at wildlife rescue centers in the Republic of Korea.

Methods: Forty-two Eurasian eagle owls (), 34 Oriental turtle doves (), 73 domestic pigeons (), 27 brown hawk-owls (), 76 common kestrels (), and 25 Eurasian magpies () were included in this study.

Rationalization of the structural, electronic and photophysical properties of silver(I) halide -picolylamine hybrid coordination polymers.

Hybrid coordination polimers based on AgX (with X = Cl, Br) and 2-, 3-, 4-picolylamine ligands, obtained by means of solvent-free methods, show peculiar luminescence properties that are strongly influenced by their structural motif, which in turn is defined by the adopted isomer of the ligand. A comprehensive study, combining photophysical methods and DFT calculations, allowed to rationalize the emissive behaviour of such hybrid coordination polymers in relation to their crystal structures and electronic properties. By means of luminescence measurements at variable temperatures, the nature of the emissive excited states and their deactivation dynamics was interpreted, revealing XMLCT transitions in the [(AgX)(2-pica)] compounds, a TADF behaviour in the case of 3-pica derivatives, and a dual emission at room temperature for the [(AgX)(4-pica)] family.

Objectives: To investigate the potential utility of the C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio (CAR) and the systemic immune-inflammatory index (SII) as a biomarker in distinguishing between BPPV and acute cerebellar infarction (ACI) due to posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) involvement.

Methods: The data of 2545 patients registered in our hospital database between 2017 and 2024 with a diagnosis of vertigo were retrospectively analyzed and 102 patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) and 100 patients with ACI were included in the study. Mann-Whitney U test, Chi-square test, or Fisher's exact test were used to compare variables between the two groups.

An adult patient was admitted to our emergency department for a first episode of generalized tonic-clonic seizure. Computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging showed a temporal intracranial hemorrhage and parenchymal edema caused by a dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF), whose angioarchitecture was better understood through the DSA which showed as intriguing and rare vascular anomaly the origin of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) from the middle meningeal artery (MMA). The endovascular treatment of the DAVF was then successfully performed.
