129I, a very long lived fission product, persisted in the environment after discharge from the chemical reprocessing plants at Hanford. The significance to human health is evaluated by considering the maximum possible impact it might have. Allowing the total production of 129I to be discharged to the air and considering the location where the maximally exposed individuals residue, the lifetime cumulative thyroid dose is calculated as a function of birth year. The maximally exposed individual at the maximum exposure location was born in 1954 and accumulates a thyroid dose between 1954 and 1995 of slightly over 9,000 microSv (900 mrem) at an average rate of 220 microSv (22 mrem) y-1. Over the same period of time, the soft tissue dose from background radiation due to both external and internal radiation is about 38,000 microSv (3,800 mRem).

Although banned long ago in many countries and jurisdictions, the organochlorine pesticide dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and compounds related to it remain in the aquatic environment, particularly in sediments, and can pose risks to aquatic life. To inform ecological risk assessment of these compounds, we tested the toxicity of six DDT congeners, specifically the p, p' (4,4') forms of DDT, dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE), dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (DDD), and dichlorodiphenylchloroethylene (DDMU), as well as the o, p' (2,4') isomers of DDT and DDD. The epibenthic amphipod, Hyalella azteca, was exposed for 7 days to waterborne chemical and assessed for changes in survival and growth.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), an X-linked neuromuscular disorder, characterised by progressive immobility, chronic inflammation and premature death, is caused by the loss of the mechano-transducing signalling molecule, dystrophin. In non-contracting cells, such as neurons, dystrophin is likely to have a functional role in synaptic plasticity, anchoring post-synaptic receptors. Dystrophin-expressing hippocampal neurons are key to cognitive functions such as emotions, learning and the consolidation of memories.

The combustion efficiency and reactivity of aluminum (Al) particles, as a crucial component in solid propellants, are constrained by the inert oxide layer aluminum oxide (AlO). Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) can remove the oxide layer, however, carbon deposition generated during the reaction process still limits the reaction efficiency of Al/PTFE fuel. Here, a litchi-like Al/PTFE fuel with the nano-PTFE islands distributed on the Al particles surface is successfully designed, based on localized activation and synergistic reaction strategies, to solve the AlO layer and carbon deposition.
