We studied 12 male schizophrenia patients in a 6-week treatment trial comparing two neuroleptics and placebo. Efficacy in regard to negative symptoms was of interest, and Alphs' Negative Symptom Assessment (NSA) was included. The NSA includes behaviorally anchored ratings such as "prolonged time to response" and "restricted speech output." Audio recordings of interviews with the patients were analyzed acoustically. In general, the behavioral anchors did not prevent the ratings from being influenced by global impressions. There was a strong correlation between each item and the total of other items, but a modest correlation with the relevant behavioral measure. Results suggest that, even with specific and behaviorally anchored items, the clinician's assessment is confounded by global impressions. Treatment effects were greater for the acoustic measures than for the clinical measures.

Previous research suggests that emotional prosody perception is impaired in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease (AD) and primary progressive aphasia (PPA). However, no previous research has investigated emotional prosody perception in these diseases under non-ideal listening conditions. We recruited 18 patients with AD, and 31 with PPA (nine logopenic (lvPPA); 11 nonfluent/agrammatic (nfvPPA) and 11 semantic (svPPA)), together with 24 healthy age-matched individuals.

Mechanical failure of medical implants, especially in orthopedic poses a significant burden to the patients and healthcare system. The majority of the implant failures are diagnosed at very late stages and are of mechanical causes. This makes the diagnosis and screening of implant failure very challenging.

A harmonic analysis performed on long time series reveals a surprising magnitude of S constituent (exactly 1 cpd of frequency) in the horizontal velocity and echo amplitude, which prevails over the rest of diurnal constituents within this depth range, including K, despite being around 200 times smaller than it in the tide generating potential. High resolution echograms collected by a new instrument recently installed in the mooring line, point at the diel vertical migration of living acoustic scatterers (zooplankton) as the most reasonable cause.

Ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) is the standard for diagnosing plateau iris, but its limited accessibility in routine clinical settings presents challenges. While anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) is more convenient, its effectiveness in detecting plateau iris is limited. Previous research has demonstrated that combining UBM and AS-OCT image pairs through neural style transfer has improved classification accuracy.

Background: Allergic rhinitis (AR) and acute non-allergic rhinosinusitis (ARS) often present with similar symptoms. While these are generally differentiated by history and occasionally by secretion cell counts, there are few data temporally comparing these conditions.
Methods: A prospective, observational study was conducted to assess nasal mucus properties, nasal obstruction, nasal secretion cells, and health related QOL during the acute phase (Day 5) and during a later phase of illness (Day 14/28).
