Sustaining altitude pastures in mountain landscapes-a fuzzy cognitive model approach.

Sci Total Environ

June 2024

MED-Mediterranean Institute for Agriculture, Environment and Development, CHANGE - Global Change and Sustainability; IIFA - Institute for Advanced Studies and Research, University of Évora, 7006-554 Évora, Portugal.

Similarly to other European mountain areas, in Serra da Estrela the grazing pressure has been reducing due to social and economic drivers that have pushed shepherds and sheep to the foothill, or plainly out of the sector. Shrub encroachment on commons and other previously grazed land is one of the most tangible effects of pastoral abandonment in Serra de Estrela. The impacts of the resulting increase in landscape continuity and biomass availability were made clear in the severe fires of 2017 and 2022.

Bridging the gap between the micro and the macro scale in modelling food security to inform context-specific regionalised policies remains a major scientific challenge. A better understanding of the relations between global and local drivers impacting local food self-sufficiency (LFSS) is essential. We applied to the whole Mediterranean environmental area (Southern and Northern) a modelling framework for structural estimates (PLS-PM) using qualitative and quantitative methods to combine local-level information from field surveys and participatory workshops with global-level data.

Article Synopsis
  • Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic skin condition with few treatment options for teens, and lebrikizumab, an antibody targeting IL-13, shows potential benefits in treating it, based on previous studies.
  • The Phase 3 ADore study involved 206 adolescents with moderate-to-severe AD, who received lebrikizumab and were monitored for safety and effectiveness over 52 weeks.
  • Out of 172 participants who completed the study, many experienced improvements, such as 65% achieving significant reductions in disease severity, while serious side effects were infrequent, indicating the treatment's promise for managing AD in adolescents.

Baricitinib and primary biliary cholangitis.

J Transl Autoimmun

Eli Lilly & Company, Indianapolis, IN, USA.

Background And Aims: There is an unmet need for alternative treatments for patients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) who do not respond to treatment with ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA). A proof-of-concept study of baricitinib, an orally administered Janus kinase 1 and 2 inhibitor, was initiated to evaluate its use in PBC patients.

Approach And Results: Patients with PBC showing inadequate response or intolerance to UDCA were eligible.

A Gradient of Hippocampal Inputs to the Medial Mesocortex.

Cell Rep

December 2019

Instituto de Medicina Molecular, Faculdade de Medicina, Universidade de Lisboa, Lisbon 1649-028, Portugal. Electronic address:

Memory-guided decisions depend on complex interactions between the hippocampus (HIPP) and medial mesocortical (MMC) regions, including the anterior cingulate (CG) and retrosplenial (RSC). The functional circuitry underlying these interactions is unclear. Using anatomy, electrophysiology, and optogenetics, we show that such circuitry is characterized by a functional-anatomical gradient.
