A mutant of the 'Streatley' isolate of barley mild mosaic bymovirus was selected from the original field isolate by repeated mechanical inoculation. Unlike the wild-type barley mild mosaic virus, which is transmitted by the soilborne fungus Polymyxa graminis, the mutant could not be transmitted by this vector. RNA-2 of the mutant virus was shorter than that of the wild-type virus suggesting that a deletion of part of the genome segment had occurred. The nucleotide sequence of the mutant RNA-2 was determined and revealed a high degree of homology with the RNA-2 of a German BaMMV field isolate. The deletion comprises 1092 nucleotides and is located in the 3'-terminal part of the coding region. The 34-kDa truncated form of the C-terminal protein is less than half the size of the corresponding protein of full-length BaMMV RNA-2. Taken together, the sequence data and results of biological experiments suggest an essential role of the C-terminal protein for fungus transmission of BaMMV.

The rice husk biomass remaining from the industrial processing of rice constitutes approximately 25 wt% of the edible rice produced, and its disposal is challenging due to its high silica content. Here, we describe the optimization of a single step innovative chemical process for the conversion of rice husk-based biomass into useable products which tackles all fractions of the input biomass. The chemical process consists of a single step hydrothermal low temperature treatment of rice husk biomass leading to three easy-to-recover fractions.

Mixtures containing β-glucans were extracted from barley, under both mild and high alkaline conditions, to prepare biodegradable films (MA and HA, respectively), as natural dressings with intrinsic therapeutic properties. An in-depth characterization was performed to evaluate the impact of mild and high alkaline conditions on chemical, physicochemical, and biological features for potential use in wound treatments. Both MA and HA films exhibited a good ability to absorb water and simulate wound fluid, which helps maintain optimal tissue hydration.

Combat sports athletes often undergo rapid body mass loss (BML), which presents health risks. Hydration testing has been proposed as a possible solution to reduce or eliminate rapid BML. However, combat sports athletes may exhibit distinct physiological characteristics due to repeated exposure to BML.

Triticum mosaic virus (TriMV, genus , family ) was first reported in 2006 (Seifers et al. 2008) to infect wheat, and since then, it has been established as a constraint for US wheat production (Byamukama et al. 2013).
