Parkinson's patients were genotyped for the apolipoprotein E alleles as well as polymorphisms at the apolipoprotein B loci to determine whether they were at risk for late onset Alzheimer's disease or coronary disease. The Parkinson's patients were at no greater risk for either disease than were the control spouses. The frequency for the APOE4 allele was 11% compared with the spouses, 10%. Interestingly, 20% of the patients had the 2/3 genotype which may have a protective effect from late onset Alzheimer's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms, including olfactory dysfunction. Prior studies have shown that olfaction deteriorates with disease progression, however fluctuations in olfaction and related PD symptoms have been less explored. This study aimed to investigate correlations between changes in odor identification ability and PD symptoms.

Omnipolar mapping versus point-by-point mapping approach for catheter ablation of atrioventricular accessory pathway.

J Interv Card Electrophysiol

January 2025

Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Dokkyo Medical University, 880 Kitakobayashi, Mibu, Shimotsugagun, Tochigi, 321-0293, Japan.

Background: The conventional mapping approach for the atrioventricular accessory pathway (AP) involves point-by-point mapping to identify the connection sites of the AP to the atria or ventricle and accurate interpretation of local electrograms. Omnipolar mapping technology (OMT) explains how vector and wave speed are produced by using both unipolar and bipolar signals to obtain omnipolar signals, directions, and conduction velocity. The aim of this study is to verify the effectiveness of OMT for catheter ablation of AP.

From the Department of Radiology, Ansan Hospital, Korea University College of Medicine, Ansan, South Korea (C.K., C.K., Y.H.L.); Department of Urology, Ansan Hospital, Korea University College of Medicine, Ansan, South Korea (B.S.T.); and Department of Neurology, Ansan Hospital, Korea University College of Medicine, Ansan, South Korea (D.-Y.K.).

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the association between the use of linear and macrocyclic gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) and the subsequent development of Parkinson disease (PD).

Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, data were extracted from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database, comprising 1,038,439 individuals. From this population, 175,125 adults aged 40 to 60 years with no history of brain disease were identified.

January 2025

Department of Neurology, Faculty of Medicine and Graduate School of Medicine, Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan.

Background: Pose estimation algorithms applied to two-dimensional videos evaluate gait disturbances; however, a few studies have used this method to evaluate ataxic gait.

Objective: The aim was to assess whether a pose estimation algorithm can predict the severity of cerebellar ataxia by applying it to gait videos.

Methods: We video-recorded 66 patients with degenerative cerebellar diseases performing the timed up-and-go test.

A study on the exploration of mild cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease based on decision-making cognitive computing.

Front Neurosci

January 2025

Department of Neurology, The Second Medical Center and National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Diseases, Chinese PLA General Hospital, Beijing, China.

Mild cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease (PD-MCI) as an independent risk factor for dementia in Parkinson's disease has prognostic value in predicting dementia in PD patients. It was found that the calculation of cognitive function decision-making could better evaluate the cognitive function of PD-MCI. Therefore, this study explored deficits in decision-making cognitive function in PD-MCI population, and mined novel digital biomarkers for recognizing early cognitive decline in PD-MCI through an independently designed maze decision-making digital assessment paradigm.
