The phagocytic response following X-ray-induced apoptosis in the neonatal rat brain was examined by immunohistochemistry with the antibodies OX-6 and OX-42 which recognize MHC class II antigens and the CR3 complement receptor, respectively. Few OX-6-immunoreactive cells were observed in control rats, and in rats irradiated at postnatal day 2 and examined during the first 2 postnatal weeks. However, a transient increase in the number of OX-42-immunoreactive amoeboid microglia, containing large numbers of apoptotic cells, occurred at 6, 24 and 48 h after irradiation when compared with age-matched controls. These results show that X-ray-induced apoptosis promotes a short-lasting phagocytic response.

X-ray induced photodynamic therapy (X-PDT) leverages penetrating X-ray to generate singlet oxygen (O) for treating deep-seated tumors. However, conventional X-PDT typically relies on heavy metal inorganic scintillators and organic photosensitizers to produce O, which presents challenges related to toxicity and energy conversion efficiency. In this study, highly biocompatible organic phosphorescent nanoscintillators based on hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOF) are designed and engineered, termed BPT-HOF@PEG, to enhance X-PDT in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treatment.

X-ray irradiation induces widespread changes in gene expression. Positioned at the bottom of the central dogma, translational regulation responds swiftly to environmental stimuli, fine-tuning protein levels. However, the global view of mRNA translation following X-ray exposure remains unclear.

X-ray induced photodynamic therapy (XPDT) utilizes self-lighting nanoparticles to combine the benefits of radiotherapy and photodynamic therapy. These nanomaterials transform X-ray to visible light that can be absorbed by nearby photosensitizers and in the presence of surrounding oxygen molecules generates reactive oxygen species, which are very toxic to the cells. Despite many studies conducted on modelling XPDT, little focused on the contribution of each component as well as their synergy effects.

Background: Cancer radiotherapy (RT) still has limited clinical success because of the obstacles including radioresistance of hypoxic tumors, high-dose X-ray-induced damage to adjacent healthy tissue, and DNA-damage repair by intracellular PD-L1 in tumor.

Results: Therefore, to overcome these obstacles multifunctional core-shell BMS@PtAu nanoparticles (NPs) are prepared using nanoprecipitation followed by electrostatic assembly. PtAu clusters are released from BMS@PtAu NPs to alleviate tumor hypoxia by catalyzing the decomposition of endogenous HO to generate O as well as by enhancing X-ray deposition at the tumor site, which thereby reduce the required X-ray dose.

Salivary hypofunction is a common complication in patients with head and neck cancers following radiotherapy (RT). RT-induced inflammation in salivary gland cells leads to apoptosis and fibrosis. Artesunate (ART) is a bioactive compound with anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrosis properties.
