[Circumscribed myositis ossificans: bone changes detected by MRI].

Published: July 1995

The authors report a case of ossificans myositis, in which MRI showed inflammatory changes of the adjacent bone. T1 weighted fat saturation sequence with gadolinium injection showed enhancement of medullary and cortical bone. This potentially mistaking pattern must be known, to avoid misdiagnosing with malignant osseous tumor, specially before achievement of the characteristic pattern of zonal maturation and its calcified rim.

Localized painful nodules associated with focal myositis have been previously documented, either as isolated occurrences or in conjunction with systemic illnesses, such as polymyositis [1-4]. These nodules typically manifest over the course of 2-8 weeks and exhibit histological features consistent with inflammatory myositis. Here we present a unique case of a patient with a history of myasthenia gravis, who experienced exacerbation of myasthenic symptoms, accompanied by the development of palpable, tender nodules on her thighs and proximal weakness.

Circumscribed myositis ossificans is a benign process of focal heterotopic ossification of the soft tissues, occurring in young subjects, usually following trauma. We report a case of a 15-year-old patient who suffered a direct trauma to the thigh during a soccer match, and developed a hard mass in the anterior face of the thigh. The patient was diagnosed with myositis ossificans secondary to trauma.

Introduction: Circumscribed or pseudomalignant myositis ossificans (MO) is a rare and benign condition characterized by heterotopic bone formation in soft tissues. The clinical presentation of MO, imaging investigations, histological findings, and treatment strategies are unclear, especially in the pediatric population.

Materials And Methods: A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar electronic databases to identify original articles and reviews in English or French of traumatic and non-traumatic MO.

Article Synopsis
  • Myositis ossificans is a condition where bone forms in skeletal muscle and is identified in three subtypes: fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva, nontraumatic myositis ossificans, and traumatic myositis ossificans.
  • A case study is presented involving a 10-year-old girl with Thevenards syndrome who experienced a traumatic hip dislocation that led to a rare complication of circumstantial myositis ossificans.
  • Radiological imaging, including X-rays and CT scans, showed mature bone at the lesion's periphery, leading to a diagnosis, and treatment for the dislocation and complication was managed nonoperatively.
