Aging impairs bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell (BMSC) functions as well as associated angiogenesis which is critical for bone regeneration and repair. Hence, repairing bone defects in elderly patients poses a formidable challenge in regenerative medicine. Here, the engineered dental pulp stem cell-derived exosomes loaded with the natural derivative of adenosine Cordycepin (CY@D-exos) are fabricated by means of the intermittent ultrasonic shock, which dually rejuvenates both senescent BMSCs and endothelial cells and significantly improve bone regeneration and repair in aged animals.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated a new surgical technique called laminoplasty and in-site regrafting (LPIR) for patients with thoracic ossification of the ligamentum flavum (TOLF), addressing issues like thoracic kyphosis and loss of spinal motion.
  • Eight patients (3 males, 5 females, average age 52.87) underwent LPIR surgery between January 2019 and March 2024, with positive outcomes measured by pre- and post-operative pain and function scores.
  • Results showed significant symptom alleviation, with a notable reduction in pain and improvement in overall functional scores post-surgery, indicating that LPIR is a safe and effective option for treating TOLF.

Nonlinear standing waves for assessing material nonlinearity in thin samples.

Ultrasonics

August 2024

School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA 30332, USA.

The second harmonic generation (SHG) technique offers a quantitative damage parameter known as the acoustic nonlinearity parameter (β) capable of detecting the change in the inherent material nonlinearity. However, current SHG methods, in particular, those used for measuring β in construction materials, have an unresolved issue in their application due to limited sample sizes. The restricted sample dimensions lead to the generation of boundary-reflected waves, which hinder the selective detection of propagating waves and thus the precise evaluation of material nonlinearity through β.

Objectives: This study aimed to indicate the feasibility of a prototype electrical neuromodulation system using a closed-loop energy-efficient ultrasound-based mechanism for communication, data transmission, and recharging.

Materials And Methods: Closed-loop deep brain stimulation (DBS) prototypes were designed and fabricated with ultrasonic wideband (UsWB) communication technology and miniaturized custom electronics. Two devices were implanted short term in anesthetized Göttingen minipigs (N = 2).
