A four year follow up trial of 109 cases of the Wagner type of prosthetic surface replacement has been undertaken. It has been found that this type of arthroplasty has been associated with a higher rate of loosening that the conventional total hip replacement. This loosening mainly affects the femoral component. The morphological changes which occured below the loosened femoral component did not show typical avascular necrosis due to implantation of the prosthesis. The changes seen were due to mechanical failure of the bone which resulted from previous structural weakness of the femoral head. Hence loosening of the implant occurred mainly in femoral heads which had cysts, partial necrosis or osteoporosis. Loosening of the implant was not definitely related to the position of the hip and occured in both the valgus as well as the biomechanically unfavourable varus position.

In plasma, the zymogens factor XII (FXII) and prekallikrein reciprocally convert each other to the proteases FXIIa and plasma kallikrein (PKa). PKa cleaves high-molecular-weight kininogen (HK) to release bradykinin, which contributes to regulation of blood vessel tone and permeability. Plasma FXII is normally in a "closed" conformation that limits activation by PKa.

Type 4 pili (T4P) are multifunctional filaments involved in adhesion, surface motility, biofilm formation, and horizontal gene transfer. These extracellular polymers are surface-exposed and, therefore, act as antigens. The human pathogen Neisseria gonorrhoeae uses pilin antigenic variation to escape immune surveillance, yet it is unclear how antigenic variation impacts most other functions of T4P.

Synergistic binding ability of electrostatic tweezers and femtosecond laser-structured slippery surfaces enabling unusual droplet manipulation applications.

We propose a novel contactless droplet manipulation strategy that combines electrostatic tweezers (ESTs) with lubricated slippery surfaces. Electrostatic induction causes the droplet to experience an electrostatic force, allowing it to move with the horizontal shift of the EST. Because both the EST and the slippery operating platform prepared by a femtosecond laser exhibit a strong binding effect on droplets, the EST droplet manipulation features significant flexibility, high precision, and can work under various operating conditions.

Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Planning & Resources), University of Mauritius, Reduit, Mauritius.

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) represent a promising class of biodegradable polyesters synthesized by various microorganisms as energy storage compounds. Their versatility and environmental friendliness make them potential candidates for replacing conventional plastics across numerous applications. However, challenges such as limited mechanical properties, high production costs, and thermal instability have hindered their widespread adoption.
