Many primary care providers (PCPs) in the Veterans Health Administration need updated clinical training in women's health. The objective was to design, implement, and evaluate a training program to increase participants' comfort with and provision of care to women Veterans, and foster practice changes in women's health care at their local institutions. The Women's Health Mini-Residency was developed as a multi-day training program, based on principles of adult learning, wherein knowledge gleaned through didactic presentations was solidified during small-group case study discussions and further enhanced by hands-on training and creation of a facility-specific action plan to improve women Veterans' care.

Introduction: A cost-effective professional development program enhancing musculoskeletal (MSK) skills of physicians and allied health providers working in primary care settings has been reported at a single site. This article describes the first 2 years of the national expansion and implementation of a 3-day "MSK Mini-residency."
Methods: Faculty from Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers worked in partnership with national program faculty from the Salt Lake City VA to present an intensive, integrated, multidisciplinary program to strengthen the skills of primary care providers in evaluating and managing MSK conditions common in primary care.

The forming of professional competence constitutes the primary mission of the university. It follows that the maintenance of professional competence is part of that same mission. Physicians will always remain the first motor of their own competence, but the university will play a major role in organizing and providing continuing medical education activities.

The miniresidency program in geriatrics begun in 1985 at the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine acquaints practicing health professionals with a multidisciplinary team approach to the care of geriatric patients. The two-week program features participation in a multidisciplinary outpatient clinic, home visits, social work and nutrition consultations, and conferences with patients and families. Miniresidency members also participate in neurologic and neuropsychological evaluations and attend day care for demented adults.
