Environmental light conditions during development can have long-lasting effects on the physiology and behavior of an animal. Photoperiod, a clear example of environmental light conditions, is detected by and coded in the suprachiasmatic nucleus. It is therefore possible that differences observed in behavior in adulthood after exposure to different perinatal photoperiods are caused by lasting changes in the suprachiasmatic nucleus or alternatively, in other nuclei affected by perinatal photoperiod.

Objective: To date, the identification of objective biomarkers of neural epileptic activity (EA) remains challenging. We therefore investigated whether neuronal complexity could serve as an interictal electroencephalographic measure of EA, independent of interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs). By tapering anti-seizure medication (ASM) during video-EEG (electroencephalography) monitoring (VEM), we studied whether changes in neuronal complexity could reliably indicate the increase in EA and identify patients with epilepsy.

Background: The ability of current depth-of-anaesthesia monitors to differentiate subtle changes in the conscious state has not been well characterised. We examine the variability in bispectral index (BIS) scores associated with disconnected conscious and unconscious states as confirmed by a novel serial awakening paradigm.

Methods: Seventy adult participants, given propofol or dexmedetomidine, had a cumulative 1381 electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings across two centres.
