In-depth characterization of fundamental folding steps of small model peptides is crucial for a better understanding of the folding mechanisms of more complex biomacromolecules. We have previously reported on the folding/unfolding kinetics of a model α-helix. Here, we study folding transitions in chignolin (GYDPETGTWG), a short β-hairpin peptide previously used as a model to study conformational changes in β-sheet proteins.

FixL is an oxygen-sensing heme-PAS protein that regulates nitrogen fixation in the root nodules of plants. In this paper, we present the first photothermal studies of the full-length wild-type FixL protein from and the first thermodynamic profile of a full-length heme-PAS protein. Photoacoustic calorimetry studies reveal a quadriphasic relaxation for FixL*WT and the five variant proteins (FixL*R200H, FixL*R200Q, FixL*R200E, FixL*R200A, and FixL*I209M) with four intermediates from <20 ns to ∼1.

This paper investigates thermal transport in a nanocomposite system consisting of a porous silicon matrix filled with ionic liquid. Firstly, the thermal conductivity and heat capacity of two imidazolium and one ammonium ionic liquids were evaluated using the photoacoustic approach in piezoelectric configuration and differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. Then, the thermal transport properties of the composite system "ionic liquid confined inside porous silicon matrix" were investigated with the photoacoustic approach in gas-microphone configuration.

A covalently linked bichromophore, embracing 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethinyl)pentacene (TIPS-pentacene) terminals bridged by a rigid fluorene spacer, generates a relatively high yield (i.e., 65 ± 6%) of the spin-correlated, triplet biexciton upon illumination in toluene.

A novel method of acoustic resonance laser calorimetry (ARLC) for the determination of low optical absorption coefficients of crystals and glasses is introduced. It is based on measurements of the kinetics of the equivalent temperature of the sample irradiated by the pulse laser radiation. The equivalent temperature of the sample is directly obtained by measuring the frequency changes of its temperature-calibrated acoustic resonances excited by the laser radiation with a corresponding pulse repetition rate.
