Objectives: Paravertebral crystal deposition disease, characterized by the deposition of crystals around the vertebral bodies leading to acute inflammation and pain, is a condition that remains largely unrecognized. This study aims to elucidate the prevalence, clinical features, and CT findings associated with this disease.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 14,839 consecutive patients who underwent chest and/or abdominal CT (September 2017 to September 2024) owing to chest, abdominal, or back pain.

How Do I Diagnose Fibrolamellar Carcinoma?

Mod Pathol

January 2025

Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. Electronic address:

Fibrolamellar carcinoma (FLC) is a unique primary carcinoma of liver that is characterized by distinct morphologic findings and a recurrent DNAJB1::PRKACA gene fusion. It typically presents in young individuals without underlying liver dysfunction. FLC is a difficult diagnosis when based only on morphology and misdiagnosis is not uncommon.

Background: Biomechanical studies suggest that the triceps brachii muscle generates resistive force against valgus stress on the elbow during baseball pitching. However, given the parallel fiber orientation in the distal tendinous structure of the triceps brachii, the mechanism behind this anti-valgus force remains unclear. In the present study, we aimed to examine the anatomy of the distal tendinous structure of the triceps brachii using bony morphological, macroscopic, and histological methods.

Graphene Quantum Dots as Antifibrotic Therapy for Kidney Disease.

ACS Appl Bio Mater

January 2025

Department of Internal Medicine, College of Medicine, Seoul National University, Seoul 03080, Korea.

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have received much attention for their biomedical applications, such as bioimaging and drug delivery. Additionally, they have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. We used GQDs to treat renal fibrosis and confirmed their ability to protect renal cells from excessive oxidative stress in vitro and in vivo.

The potential of photon-counting CT for the improved precision of lung nodule radiomics.

Phys Med Biol

January 2025

Department of Radiology, Duke University, Suite 302 Hock Plaza, 2424 Erwin Rd, Durham, North Carolina, 27708-0187, UNITED STATES.

Lung nodule appearance may provide prognostic information, as the presence of spiculation increases the suspicion of a nodule being cancerous. Spiculations can be quantified using morphological radiomics features extracted from CT images. Radiomics features can be affected by the acquisition parameters and scanner technologies; thus, it is essential to identify imaging conditions that provide reliable measurements, particularly for emerging technologies like photon-counting CT.
