An updated systematic review with meta-analysis and meta-regression of the factors associated with human visceral leishmaniasis in the Americas.

Infect Dis Poverty

January 2025

Universidade Federal de São João del Rei (UFSJ), Campus Centro-Oeste Dona Lindu, Avenida Sebastião Gonçalves Coelho 400, Chanadour, Divinópolis, MG, Brazil.

Background: Human visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a systemic disease with high case-fatality rates and a widespread distribution. Continuous evaluation of the risk factors for VL is essential to ensure the effective implementation of prevention and control measures. The present study reviews the factors associated with VL in the Americas.

Poor efficacy of the combination of clarithromycin, amikacin, and cefoxitin against Mycobacterium abscessus in the hollow fiber infection model.

Ann Clin Microbiol Antimicrob

January 2025

Laboratoire des Mycobactéries, Institut des Agents Infectieux, Laboratoire de Biologie Médicale Multi-Site, Hôpital de la Croix Rousse, Hospices Civils de Lyon, Lyon, France.

Background: Mycobacterium abscessus (MABS) causes difficult-to-treat pulmonary and extra-pulmonary infections. A combination therapy comprising amikacin, cefoxitin, and a macrolide agent is recommended, but its antimicrobial activity and clinical efficacy is uncertain. Inducible resistance to macrolides (macrolides-iR) has been associated with poor clinical response in pulmonary infections, whilst for extra-pulmonary infections data are scarce.

Dielectric polymer capacitors suffer from low discharged energy density and efficiency due to their low breakdown strength, small dielectric constant and large electric hysteresis. Herein, a synergistic enhancement strategy is proposed to significantly increase both breakdown strength and dielectric constant while suppressing hysteresis, through introducing 2-dimensional bismuth layer-structured NaBiTiO micro-sheets and designing a unique bilayer structure. Excitingly, an ultra-high discharged energy density of 25.

Priapulida is a small phylum of 22 described species that are divided into two size classes (microscopic and macroscopic), distinguished by adult and larval morphology. Most priapulidans are rare or live in inaccessible habitats, and freshly collected material for molecular studies is difficult to obtain. With this study, we for the first time aim to resolve the phylogeny of extant Priapulida using transcriptomic, genomic, and morphological data.

Electronic address:

Microplastic pollution has emerged as a significant environmental concern at the global level, potentially threatening biodiversity conservation and human wellbeing. As an important biological group with a wide global distribution, migratory shorebirds face considerable stress due to plastic and microplastic pollution. However, few studies have explored the ecotoxic impact of microplastic pollution on migratory shorebirds.
