Epidurography with metrizamide was performed on 9 Rhesus monkeys; physiologic saline was substituted for metrizamide in 3 control monkeys. Metrizamide successfully outlined the epidural space without causing any adverse clinical effects or direct tissue injury.

To summarize the points discussed in this article, Small animal myelography can be performed competently and safely without specialized equipment. The newer myelographic contrast media (iohexol, iopamidol) have less neurotoxic potential than those media previously used. Myelography is necessary for the diagnosis of many neurologic disorders in small animals.

The development of extended window width has greatly improved imaging of the more variable levels of attenuation encountered in contrast material within the epidural space. The procedure of distribution of contrast material by catheter technique via the sacral canal approach is described.

A method for the diagnosis of disc herniation and nerve root compression in the lower lumbar and upper sacral spine is presented. Computed tomography of the spine was carried out after injection of a positive contrast medium into the epidural space. Preliminary results indicate a high diagnostic accuracy.

In the experimental study of different contrast media, metrizamide has been found to be very safe for epidurography as no clinical, radiologic, or histologic changes after epidural injection were seen. Next in order was meglumine iothalmate. However, sodium containing salts like sodium acetrazoate and sodium iothalmate were found to be very irritating to the nerve roots and the spinal cord and, therefore, should not be used for epidurographic studies.

By using the water-soluble non-ionic contrast metrizamide, it has been possible to perform the examination on an outpatient basis. None of the patients has suffered from headache, nor any other complaint often associated with other diagnostic techniques which involve lumbar puncture.
